Windows 98/2000 dual boot gone bad

Actually, just the 98 part..

I have a 30Gig Maxtor partitioned with 98 on a 20Gig partition and 2000 on the other. This has been my setup for about a month no problems at all. I have mainly been using 98. Well today when I fired up my computer and chose 98, it says I have an invalid system disk and when I press enter it tries to boot from the cd. If I choose 2000 boots up perfectly. I then use Norton to check out the C drive and it's ok no errors. Any idea what happened and what I should do next? Thanks..

Try booting up with a Windows 98 Startup Disk (Make sure its the same version as you're currently running). From the Startup menu choose Bootup with No CD-ROM support (Or the option that looks closest to that). Once you've booted you will see that diagnostic tools have been loaded onto a particular drive, It will tell you which one on bootup. Change to that drive and type in

sys c:

This will replace the system files required to boot Win98. It will also stop Win2000 from starting. You will then have to startup off your Win2000 CD as though you were going to reinstall it and then select the repair option instead of install. That should put everything back to normal.

Before doing that, why don't you boot into Win2k and then look at the Boot.INI file (it's read only and tells you the boot information)? It should be located on the C drive. Tell us what's in there. I'm assuming you only have 2 total paritions. Actually, I need more info based on this....
