Ive been trying to get Windows 2000, to run on an old box that I put together with random parts. The ram was pc100, and kept causing the pc to crash, so I put in 256mb of pc133.

Windows 2000 install, has been giving me a bunch of stop messages like IRQ_ADDRESS_NOT_EQUAL_TO_OR_EQUAL, which I got past, by disabling some serial ports etc. etc. Then I got KMODE_EXCEPTION, which I got past by enabling 32 bit transfer on my two drives. Finally I have MEMORY_MANGEMENT, and for what reason I dont know why I keep recieving this error. Should I give up and install windows 98 ?

Here are my specifications

Intel P- III 1GHZ CPU @ 133 (bios clocks it at 750mhz)
256MB PC133 RAM
1x 1.6GB HDD
1x 1GB HDD
Onboard Video / Sound on an AMI Board.

With the current RAM, does it get at least one full pass w/ memtest?
What's the chipset of the board? It could be crap.
Have you checked to make sure all is well w/ the HDDs?

While Win98 may or may not install, with all of that, something is plain wrong in hardware, I think.

It sounds like you have hardware issues to resolve first. Try to complete 2 passes of Memtest86+

Okay, so I found an old copy of windows98 SE, that I had to destroy my room to find, I began installing it, and it just keeps freezing around 6% or 8%. Are there any known reasons why a windows98 SE install may freeze and lock up ?.

I dont have any more CD-RW's, and the computer does not have a floppy drive. I just bought the ram earlier today. Ive tried over 5 sticks of ram, I dont think ram is really the issue. What other sort of specific information could I give , like bios ID strings etc. etc. ?

Im just so upset, windows 98 just... keeps.. freezing..

Memtest tests more than just memory. If it fails you've got issues to resolve.

Okay hopefully this will get me some answers. I went to a local corner store and bought some cd's because its driving me (that mad) and on TEST 2, on memtest, I have had 10 failures.

-@-

191.3MB
212.MB
215.9MB
217.1MB
230.7MB

Its a 256MB chip , that I just bought today.
Im going to memtest two other 128 chips.
One chip doesnt even allow my pc to boot,
the other one has caused the same install problems.

I was only allowed to go so far on OS installations before
because of the 128mb. I think the 256mb chip allowed me
to actually go a bit further but still crash, because the ram
errors are around 191mb.

Furthermore, it was the last ramchip staples had in this model type..

What are my options from here?

NOTE:

my cpu is 1ghz. why is it showing 751.3MHZ

im suspecting the board cant handle 133mhz buss speed, which is why im @ that, what do you think

1) Try different memory slots (Hopefully that isn't high density memory you're using)
2) Try manual timings like cas 3-3-3-6
3) What is the mobo make and model?
4) 133FSB on that old board may be overclocking the pci/agp bus

The Bios doesnt have ram timing options.
It has two ram slots. Im going to try it in DIMM1.
I left it in DIMM2, from another try from something else.

The Make is AMI
It doesnt say the model number anywhere on the BIOS setup, nor
does it while its posting.

I can give a bios string :

what some chips say on the board is

==========
AMI BIOS
1999
AR16
8064
=========

REVISION AO1
ID 36K204198706SN

============

1PV712VERAO100964

==============

Intel i810

==========

My ram make is Kbyte

8064

NOTE :

the bios graphic on bootup is TOSHIBA

memtest froze @ 37% test
pass 36% with 10 errors

the memory might not be bad it just might not work with that intel motherboard
you really have to find the motherboard specs
It might not handle 133fsb or even unregistered 256mb modules
if you have 64mb modules you could try those just to see if you can get it running

If the 1GHz processor were designed to be running a 133fsb, then the multiplier would be 7.5, which makes sense since you're reporting that the board reports it as a 750MHz processor which would be true at a 100fsb.

If my memory serves though, the Intel 810 chipset was geared toward a 100fsb rather than 133, although 133 may be stamped on the board as an option. It would be immensely helpful to know what brand/model board it is so we can find out for sure. Off-hand, my current guess is that either the 256meg dimm is bad, or the jumper/dip switch(or in the Bios) are set wrong on the motherboard.

you might want to change the title of your thread, as soon as that freak Link19 gets wind of the win98, it'll just turn to crap and become pointless.

but to help you out, It looks like your memory could be a dud, since technically you are underclocking the cpu and memory on that mobo, you should have less problems...I would check to see if your DIMM is a single sided dimm or double sided, Alot of early 810 boards had problems with single sided DIMMs larger than 128mb.

Well.. I returned the 256mb chip, and now im going to be using the 128mb ram chip, which is rated at pc100 and double sided.

All I know is that the Post screen has a TOSHIBA logo, and the bio is by AMI (American Megatrends), I cannot find any type of model number, in the bios or labeled on the board. Just a few stickers with meaningless strings.

At one point, in the bios under "Advanced CMOS Settings", I could change the multiplier, from anywhere between x2.0 and 12.0, if I remember correctly, I noticed that the speed was not displaying correctly, and I changed it to like circa x7 . Rebooted, went back because the speed didnt change, and now the option says LOCKED, in grey and I cant access it.

As for jumpers on the motherboard, the only configurable ones that I can mess with, other than usb to be routed to the front or the back.

Look like this

1 . . . .
2 . . . .
3 . . .

JP3 JP4 JP5

[ 1-2 ] || [ 2-3 ]
JP3= FWH LOCK || FWH UNLOCK
JP4= SAFE SPEED || /
JP5= CLEAR PWD/CMOS || TBD

Right now my jumpers are on
FWH LOCK and /

I hope that crude diagram will help you understand my jumper placement.
