Windows 98 on nforce 4

I bought an MSI nforce4 MB and I want to install Win XP on it. The problem is, it's an upgrade from Win 98. I would have to install Win 98 first. Not sure if this is a problem but since things like SATA are not even supported on Win 98, as far as I know, I figure there are going to be many driver issues. I noticed the floppys with the SATA drivers that came with the MB only support Win 2000/XP.
I would rather not buy a full install of XP since it is due for replacement in the next year? but would if I had to. I do have the 64 bit Windows beta I could try but it probably would have even worse driver support.
Any suggestions?

First of all, WIndows 98 is a POS. You don't have to install WIndows 98 first. All you have to have is the Windows 98 disc around. You can still do a clean install of Windows XP, it will just ask you to insert the Windows 98 disc during the install to verify you owned Windows 98 before you purchased the upgrade of Windows XP.

I've reinstalled it before on my current system, trying to use the XP disc only but it refuses. It exits and says I must install Win 98 first. Maybe it's the version I have.

Longhorn is a quite a bit further off than a year. You might as well buy an XP Pro disk

Are you booting directly from the XP CD?

Thought I was. I'll try it again when I install on the new system. Maybe use the Win 64 OS as a backup. If that doesn't work then I'll have to get a full install XP.
