When I'm in Windows and go to restart, I get "Windows is shutting down" and locks up. When I shut down I get "It is now safe to turn off your computer".....but I can't shut it off.

I just did a new install for everything. Is this a commen problem or did I overwrite some files or drives by mistake. I did a online windows update but same problem. Is there a patch out there that fixes this. I have VIA 4in1 4.28 official installed. Thanks for any help>

I would recommend updating to the latest BIOS. The problem might be with the power managment setting in your BIOS not being properly "identified" by Windows...

There is a shutdown patch on the Microsoft website for this exact problem with WIN98SE. Check it out.

more people encounter this problem than u realize!!!

definately get the shutdown patch from msn, also disable any programs in your taskbar that are not essential. Sometimes these interfere with the shut down procedure. to disable them from appearing each time you rebbot disable them by running msconfig in your run bar and uncheck those programs that you dont need to initialize at boot up!

I recently put together a system, for the life of me I couldn't figure out this stupid shut-down problem either, after all the patches and going through MS support, the problem for me was I had the USB Keyboard option in the BIOS enabled, I disabled and problem went away......go figure....so just wanted to point out to ya it could be other things as well.

Windows 98 or Me doesn't shutdown properly!

There can be a number of reasons for this. These include:

You need to assign an IRQ for VGA in the BIOS
Too many mapped network drives (there is apparently a patch available from Microsoft for that) - see Microsoft's knowledge base article Q260067 "Windows Stops Responding During Shutdown with Mapped Drives"
Check out Microsoft's knowledge base article Q238096 "How to Troubleshoot Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Problems"
Check out Microsoft's knowledge base article Q239887 "Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement"
One user reported that disabling bus mastering should allow Windows 98 to shutdown properly, but that it slows down the graphics performance substantially. He also suggested that an apparently better workaround is to set the AGP aperture to 16M (this effectively switches off AGP).
If your system reboots rather than shuts down under Windows 98SE you need to disable fast shutdowns - go to Start Menu, Run then type "msconfig" then disable in Advanced... option at the bottom of the first menu
This can sometimes be due to disk corruption - run scandisk and see if there are any problems

Thanks a million guys!! I ran the patch and windows shuts down properly...restart still doesn't work though. I printed out those articles and I'm going to start trouble shooting tonight. I think the problem started when I installed my Sound Card...I might have overwritten windows files with older versions. Could this have caused the problem?
