Windows and Crashing

I honestly don't know why so many people complain about Windows 9x crashing all the time. I'm running WinME, and I seem to never have a crash. I think that a lot of people just load too much crap into their memory when the computer boots. I notice a lot of my friends have like 8-10 things in their task bar. All I have is ICQ, the sound thing, and the time.

Anyone else find that their machine is rock-stable under WinME, 98, etc?

It seems like you're not "using" your machine. You're basically turning it on and off without changing any settings, installing or uninstalling any hardware or software except what the manufacturer shipped you. That's not "using" a machine. You're treating your PC like a paperweight. No wonder Windows isn't crashing on you.

The real stability of an OS is measured by its ability to maintain itself through numerous installations of hardware, software, drivers and so on.

A lot of random crashes these days are cause by spy-ware. Often located in file share programs or other download.com type programs. What the programs do is run in your memory and send information from your computer to an ad agentcy that uses the info for advertising purposes. They are very unstable and often have a lot of memory leaks.

There is a neat free tool out there called Adaware that removes these programs.

Well, on the contrary...

I do web site work all the time on here, so that means it wouldn't be uncommon to have Photoshop 6.0, WS_FTP, ICQ, WinAmp, A few IE's, Netscapes, email, etc all open at once. Even then, I don't have any problems.

Hell, when I go to play games, I usually leave my ICQ open.. and very often have WinAmp playing music in the background when I'm playing certain games.

Also, I've been messing around with various versions of KyroII drivers the past few days, without problems.

lucidguy, Oh so now with your superior self can determine how someone uses their machine by the number of proggies they start their rig with, and good gawd if your not crashing your win9x machine everyday, its just a paperweight.....yea, you seem smarter with each and every post.

I just keep my systray to a minimum. I've never had a problem with win ME crashing. I may have a few things on the systray but that doesn't mean I'm not using my computer in an effective manner.

Hi there.

I've had the pleasure of running Win98 SE for quite some time, and in my experience, it is quite stable. Of course, using Windows, I've had my share of crashes, but they've mostly being induced by myself or my siblings.

I like to consider myself a performance user. On startup, I have 2 itmes in the system tray, the Windows sound utility and task scheduler. That's it.

Most of the instability of Windows, in my humble opinion, are hardware induced. Once you've minimized this, you have to contend with softer-side instability. Lastly, but certainly not the least, comes the inherent stability that comes from the integrated nature of Internet Explorer to Windows (which is in addition to the security issue it poses).

Windows 98SE, in the hands of the knowledgeable, can be made stable and useable. I'm not too knowledgeable but my system is as stable as it gets--barring a comparison with an OS without integrated IE

CHEERS!
