Mine did the same thing (xp pro and the 2k box) about an hour ago. I also have the Critical Updates package installed, and it never notfied me of anything! Then, I go back just a few minutes ago and I get this:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (Windows XP)*
Download size: 452 KB, < 1 minute
Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is the most recent version of the Internet Explorer 6 core technologies in Windows® XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 provides a private, reliable, and flexible browsing experience and the freedom to experience the best of the Internet for users of Windows XP, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows NT® 4.0 Service Pack 6a. Total download size for a typical installation is approximately 25 megabytes (MB). However, because setup downloads only those files that are necessary for your computer, this size can vary between 11 and 75 MB. Read more...

Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Express)*
Download size: 1.9 MB, < 1 minute
Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) provides the latest security, reliability, and performance updates to the Windows XP family of operating systems. Windows XP SP1 is designed to ensure Windows XP platform compatibility with newly released software and hardware, and includes updates that resolve issues that were discovered by customers or by Microsoft's internal testing team. Total download size for a typical installation is approximately 30 megabytes (MB). However, because setup downloads only those files that are necessary for your computer, this size may vary. So, my question is this: Is this service pack rushed b/c of the security issue? For those who have the Corporate Ed of XP, is this the SP that's going to wreck your system? (sorry, I never really read much about it, just heard that, so forgive me if I'm totally off base)

Wouldn't it be nice if the Critical Update Notification worked when something THIS CRITICAL was out! bawhahahahahaah!

This update is so new it hasn't made it to the Windows Update page, yet. I found the link to the bulletin in the News.com article (see my first post).

MS is so big, I guess it takes awhile for this info to filter through their system to all destinations.

I have an idea they purposefully wait to put it on critical updates. Why? Because if there's a problem once it hits critical updates, it could screw a lot of people up. However, if they let people who are keeping up on the technet whatever thing try it first (probably a few 10's of thousands) then if a problem happens they can fix it before the general public grabs it. Sorta like a final beta test

As for service pack 1, that's been finalized for at least a month if I'm not mistaken. Stuff that's within the past couple weeks won't have gotten into it.

As for SP1 wreaking system if you are corporate, that's only if you use a pirated CD key. See corporate editions have like 1 CD key for the whole company, so it can be used multiple times and it doesn't contact the auth server. There are a few pirated win XP keys for the corporate version (remember EACH version has differant cd keys) that have gotten spreach to thousands (millions?) of copies of winXP. If one of those illegal copies tries to install the SP1 it will then request a new CD key and authorization and not accept the old pirated keys. It also supposedly according to MS fixes the cracks that are out there for win XP.

I'm a bit confused, why should I be worried or even care if someone gets my credit card number(s)? Big deal, there is NOTHING to worry about.

Unless you are a moron who doesn't pay attention to the charges on your card then it doesn't matter much if someone gets your number. Sure, they could charge something on it, but why does that matter? Themost you can be responsible for is $50, and that rarely gets charged.

So, whenever you see credit cards companies advertising ways to help you keep your number secure they are not doing it for you, they are doing it for them.

Explain your logic to me, because it makes absolutely no sense. Your point is why spend the time on a 10 meg download because it would only cost you at the most $50. Apparently you're the type of guy who wipes his a$$ with hundred dollar bills, but I personally would rather not have to scan my credit card for two hours every month looking for fraudulent charges plus, take into account that if your credit card does get stolen the time and effort it would take to get another would definately make you reconsider this download. But you could probably care less about all that, if you ever need money you probably pick it off the money tree that you have growing in your backyard. Sorry this is off topic but I had to respond.

Before you made this comment, I'm sure you posted your CC number in a hacking forum to prove your point. Have fun with those charges you aren't responsible for!

You're right. You are a bit confused. Quoting from the aritcle on News.com in my first post:
The flaw could let a Web site with a valid certificate issue a second, invalid one, which could enable unauthorized access to a computer as well as, among other things, the theft of user passwords or credit card numbers.
First, it's a lot more hassle to deal with clearing up charges against your credit card after the fact than it is to prevent it... Or do you like the idea of being out of town and finding your credit frozen? Second, according to the article, credit info is only one kind of data that can be stolen. I can't even imagine how many areas of personal invasion that means, let alone the potential extent of the damage.

I don't think Microsoft is a great company when it comes to security, but when a serious problem is identified, and they post a free patch, all you have to pay is attention.

I just ran update and got the same above plus another critical for Windows xp. I did the IE6 and then installed. It said " some of the files your are replacing are different from the old files. This may result in stability problems. Do you want to continue?" Well its MS update so I said yeah install... Then I went to upate again to grab the Windows XP critcal patch. Well something is wrong because udapte just sits there and does not find the XP patch, any of the non critical patches and there is no history under update history. It sits at 0% and does nothing. Why would MS put out a critical patch and then my IE6 says the patch files are in conflict. Now my windows update function is doa. What to do?????:disgust: Should I restore....?

Up to you. I NEVER replace newer files with older ones. You could always call MS and pay them the $50 or whatever to tell you to restore if you want

Not to be mean or anything but you did restart your browser right? If that doesnt work then try restarting your computer but restarting your browser should do it.
