a few links about it on google the drive is NOT SATA, and XP still boots. I just can't get it to run chkdsk. Even with my XP loading and seeming to work I'm not taking this message lightly

anyone able to shed some light on it for me? thanks

blue screen I started getting the other day "machine_check_exception" which some of the links are saying is a memory problem, but Memtest 86+ isn't reporting my memory as bad.

what more details do you want? I burned 10 DVD's trying to back stuff up with no problems, it ran all night with no BSOD, very random. I swapped PSU's last week thinking my problems might be PSU related, well I was having different problems last week, it was locking up while I'd play games. Wasn't a heat issue I don't believe because sometimes it would lock up after a minute, other times 2 hours. I will track down another IDE cable, if that doesn't work I might try a re-install of XP. I'm about to run Spinrite on the drive to make sure there's no physical issues with it.

what other information are you looking for?

MB is a Gigabyte 939, don't know the model # I will try to dig it up

PSU right now is an Allied 550, had a Thermaltake in before, this isn't the generic Allied that comes with sh!tty cases, I paid about $60 for it. I know it's not the best PSU by far but it should do the trick.

CPU Amd 3700+ never been OC'ed, heatsink is a TT Beetle, which my bios claims runs around 33c

video card x800 256, have an aftermarket Zalman cooler on it, no idea what the temperture is, but it should be okay. Never noticed any artifacts

western digital 320gig IDE.

Sb Audigy 2 is the only add-on card in this system.

I have not checked for swollen capacitors - that's probably a good idea I shall do that now and report back, thanks for the tip.

Also might be worth lowering the timings for your RAM as a ts, also, letting it even run at 333mhz (pc2700) speed - just to try it out.

you know I thought about under clocking the ram, it's pretty good Corsair XMS but running it at 333 can't hurt, Memtst didn't find anything wrong with the memory but I didn't let it run overnight, just a few hours. Maybe I should up the voltage on the memory .1v and under clock it. FYI: I have a single 512 meg stick.

the original chkdsk message still has me worried, I take what I read from links on google as a grain of salt, but it doesn't look like something I can fix without a reinstall. it doesn't give me the option to run or not when it says "do you wish to continue" it just defaults to no, which is probably for a reason. UGH I hate computers sometimes

when XP starts to boot it goes to the sceen where chkdsk starts I get this

the specified disk appears to be a non windows-xp disk

it asks if I want to run chkdsk any ways, but it defaults to no and I get my XP login screen. Seeing how I'm on the box now, I'm not sure what the message is meaning. Google is turning up a bunch of nothing about it really. Every time I reboot, or I get a BSOD I wonder if it will get to my XP

I have no problem reinstall XP, but I'd like to solve my problems before, and if possible I'd like to fix this chkdsk message without a reinstall if that's an option.

if it makes any difference my system's not running slow, seems like peoples comments on google links about this chkdsk error tend to have systems that run really slow and give read errors. I get BSOD's and such but it's normal speed.

Can you check your bootup sequence in your BIOS.....

Make sure you disable booting from removable drives.
Seems like the computer is looking elsewhere for your installation.

And take out any USB dev you have plugged in (except kb/mouse)

I don't think so, when chkdsk comes up it shows C: fat32 which is definitely my HD. in my bios it's Western Digital (HD) for first boot device, then add-in card for 2nd. I don't pay close attention but doesn't it always list that even if you have no external HD or flash drive or anything else? I did a chkdsk /f from a cmd prompt going to let it reboot and see what happens. I definitely have chkdsk problem as when I try to run Firefox I get an error that tells me to run chkdsk to fix it.

thanks for all your replies man you're very helpful I think I'm getting close to figuring this out with your ideas.

lowered my memory to 266, got 2 crashes in a row, the 2nd about 10 seconds after XP hit the desktop. Frustrated! I rar'ed up 2 of my minidump's if anyone know how to look at them and can see anything, PLEEEEASE help!

Minidump

and for every 5 crashes I get, typically only 1 or 2 results in a BSOD + minidump.

------------------------------

I looked up the _VAL_UC_EN_PCC_BUSCONNERR_F didn't find squat helpful but from the name I'm taking it to some issue with a system bus. I wonder if reinstalling XP clean would fix it. this appears to be a hardware problem, as windows is reporting that on the BSOD. I don't want to replace my MB + CPU only to find out it was a video card issue, but I have no spare parts for any of those to find out.

*edit*
just checked and noticed the Nvidia SW IDE driver was installed, I know I'd had many problems do to that in the past, though nothing like this at all. I decided to remove it to see what happens.

update -

running Acronis from a bootcd it's showing my C: as 100% full and having a problem. it's about 75% full in reality. I tried to Ghost it but it says there there are errors and aborts. I can boot to windows, and explorer is showing my free space correctly. a utility on the UBCD was saying the FAT was bad. I'm trying a sector by sector copy since the files seem to all be there and intact, at least when I boot into XP. Testdisk is showing a backup FAT exists, I'm going to try restoring that. But I want to at least back up my files just incase that makes things worse.

Spinrite the drive has no physical defects.

any ideas?

I would convert your hard drive to NTFS. Then run a chkdsk /r from the run. This should allow your hard to fix any problems that it might have. Also check you pagefile, make sure there is no bad sectors on it or around it. That would cause problems if the pc runs for a while.

Can you boot up into a live CD - like Knoppix.

See if you can read your drive.
There are also drive diagnostics on it - and it won't write to your drive unless you tell it to.

With your last couple of posts, it does sound a bit like a controller error, or hdd problem.

I'm suspecting it's a MB issue, quite a few times when it restarts on it's own, it's gets hung up on the post when it says detecting HD's. I ran Scandisk (not Chkdsk) from my bootcd and it fixed the problems with my OS partition.

I finally got my OLD XP to boot, I'm going to back up the files from the drive I know is failing - the one with the random clicks of death. don't get them often but I know it's a bad sign, and when I do the system locks up and has to be rebooted.

one drive is IDE and one is SATA, controller issue, probably just the MB. I don't have a spare MB. but right now my partitions are looking okay and as long as I have my files saved I can screw with things later. I think there is a heat issue, during the day it locks up far more than at night, it's pretty hot where I'm at and the room the PC's in can feel like an oven. I have 2 120mm fans, a good heatsink and my video card has a Zalman but that doesn't mean it can't be heat causing some of my issues. I can't verify this as sometimes the reboots don't happen during the day, and some days they happen non stop (like today) I was getting a reboot every 5 or so minutes.

I have no idea why XP wouldn't install, I actually tried again, but this time on a clean partition I just made, it copied the files, rebooted and when the first GUI screen came up I got some error about "out of files" and it aborted. As far as diagonistics I ran Spinrite, a proggy from Ontrack & the Western Digital diag software, there seems to be nothing physically wrong with the drive.

Montag451 thanks for all your help again at this point I have given up troubleshooting it until I have a MB, and definitely don't have any hopes I can fix it without buying sh!t. I'm broke right now, so I'll just sit without a PC until I can budget monies to buy new stuff. Saw 2 gigs of DDR2 at PCClub for 70 bucks AR, sounds like a GOOD time to upgrade to a Corew Duo or AM2 system

not when you're broke man I mean prices are ridiculously low but when you're broke low is still not low enough. a 6000+ with 2 gigs of DDR2 is very tempting. Once my money is right I'll be there.
