No not really, heh. But at $20 for that flash drive, it definitely didn't hurt.

Also, for comparison, the systems we have at work:

Processor: 4.0
Memory: 4.5
Aero Graphics: 2.0
Gaming Graphics: 2.5
Hard Drive: 5.3

3ghz Pentium 4, 1gb PC800 RDRAM, nVidia FX 5200, Western Digital WD400BB

These are running the drivers that Vista installed for the 5200, so I'm updating them now to see what happens.

Most results on this board are going to be high, because the only people who care even a little bit are the ones with enthusiast-type hardware.

Mine are:

CPU: 5.5 (E6600 oc'ed to 2.7)
RAM: 5.9 (2GB Corsair PC6400-C4)
Graphics: 5.9
Gaming: 5.8 (7800GT)
HDD: 5.7 (2x320 7200.10)

Here's my two installations of Vista:

1.0:
This installation is inside of Virtual PC 2004 on my 2-year-old Toshiba laptop and gets 1.0 for both graphics scores. Virtual PC doesn't provide graphics acceleration. The Windows Experience Index is based on the LOWEST score in the pile.

Unfortunately, I CAN'T install Vista directly on the laptop, since Toshiba's BIOS, according to Vista, isn't fully ACPI-compliant.

1.0:
This second installation is on:
Celeron 1.8GHz
512MB of RAM
ATI RAGE PCI video card, 8MB of memory
Again, the problem is a pair of "1.0" ratings for the video section.

5.3 here...

Processor - 5.3
Memory - 5.4
Graphics - 5.9
Gaming graphics - 5.9
Primary hard disk - 5.9

box in .sig Vista here is running much faster and snappier than even a fresh install of XP ever did on this hardware.

It's pretty odd that an AGP 6800 Ultra gets the same graphics score as an 8800GTX. I guess it doesn't take into account actual performance.

Well it makes a bit of sense, since Aero isn't really going to run better if you go from a 6800 Ultra to an 8800GTX. Gaming performance will vary, but at this time, I think the calculation they have set is a bit outdated.

Base: 5.0

But this thing is obviously flawed because I got 4.3 on my old A64/2x512/6600GT and my current system absolutely blows that away.

Microsoft doesn't just use the score to indicate how well Vista will run. They use it for the marketplace site to show people what software their computer can run based off of that score.

What I mean is, his score showed a 5.7 for gaming and a 5.9 for Aero. I was only really speaking to the Aero number and not the gaming performance number, which yes, I agree is invalid with present games and the marketplace thing, however, a 6800 ultra is going to run Aero flawlessly so it is deserving of its 5.9.
