Windows Explorer DEP

When at desktop, I can open any desktop application (Word, a folder, anything) and upon closing it I get "To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program . . . Windows Explorer."

So I click the obligatory OKs, after which the desktop blinks all icons off, sweeps some icons off the task bar (my Norton Internet Security is my main worry here), then puts my icons back on the desktop.

I've already put Windows Explorer on the exception list, but this doesn't seem to help. All this follows a system restore, updating Norton's files, scanning for viruses. Don't know what else to do.

Any suggestions/clues?

I have a similar problem as well, whenever I open a folder in Windows Explorer that has an .avi file, DEP comes into pointless action, and shuts Explorer down...

I wonder if there is a way to shut DEP down...

(To my knowledge) I'm not directly using Windows Explorer, unless it's really running when I open Word or any straight application. Maybe somebody will tune in and help, huh?

DIVX installed? If so, uninstall it (all of it), reboot, and tell us if the problem still happens.

well if your IE is crashing u might wanna check your computer for Virus's and Spyware just to be safe as well. if any of that doesnt work u might have to rebuild the OS to see if that clears the problem up.. i have had windows do a strange many thing but when IE goes nuts its never good because it futzes up your world.

Windows Explorer, which the OP mentions, isn't the same as Internet Explorer.

Also, SP2 has known issues with DIVX.

What the heck is DIVX?

Things seem to be pointing toward the XP op system. Got a reply from Gateway support today and they recommend an op sys install using Repair option, which I've not yet done. Other people are saying start all over with format, install, etc.

Virus-checker was run, as well as SpyBot.

Thanks for the replies!

DIVX is a video compression / decompression mechanism that has a problem with SP2. Go to your Add/Remove control panel and confirm you have nothing in there having to do with DIVX. And while you're there, uninstall any software that interacts with the Windows Explorer interface - anything adding any options or functionality to the right-click context, menu, for example.

Also, does this happen in safe mode?

Don't know if it happens in Safe Mode; haven't tried that. But when I try it, if it doesn't, what would that mean?

I had problems with 3ivx, not DIVX. 3ivx wrote to foreign parts of the memory and made DEP stop it.

Before you do the stuff below, you should scan for spyware. It can replace your explorer.exe. That happened to me once, except I couldn't even get in to the Windows shell (desktop).

You can go in c:\boot.ini. You'll need to boot from a DOS start up disk to do this (if Notepad and File properties don't work), and the drive must be FAT32.

type: attrib -s-h-r c:\boot.ini
type: edit c:\boot.ini

and change the end of your operating system string to look like the following

multi(x)disk(x)rdisk(x)partition(x)\XXXXXXX="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=optin

Just add /NoExecute=optin to the end (or change accordingly) and you should be good to go, I think.

Something that doesn't start in safe mode but does start in normal mode is giving your system a problem.

And did you have DIVX installed or not?

Don't know about DIVX yet. Sorry for the long interludes but I'm helping a friend with this and can only get over there about once a week, so I can't apply anything soon. Will post something when I can. Thanks for your attention!
