About every other day when I reboot, I can't even get into windows. I get this error message:

windows\system32\drivers\ksecdd.sys

status: 0xc00000e9

Info: Windows failed to start because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt.

It suggests I use the windows utility on the dvd and restart to fix the error. Basically restarting with the dvd inserted. Then a program eventually starts and tries to autofix any errors. I have done that many times and it says it can't fix the error.

What works eventually is to choose the option of starting from a previous good start. This may take 1-3 attempts to work. When it works, it only lasts about 1-2 days. Then the error appears again. Rinse and Repeat.

I have purchased and used the Regbooster and Regcure softwear to clean up my registry. Both of these programs have not fixed the error, but cost $30 each.

I keep windows vista 32 bit updated along with my graphic card drivers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for over two months.

ksecdd.sys appears to be for user authentication during logon. It's a critical system driver that functions at the kernel level so you can't just get rid of it.

It sounds like what possibly is happening is you have a hard drive with a failing sector, the same place where that file is written. A system restore fixes it temporarially but it just becomes corrupt again in a short time.

Run a scan of your drive to see if there are errors. If so you might want to think about replacing the hard drive.

Thanks for the feedback. I had wondered about that possibility. I haven't had any other "crashes," but I guess that doesn't mean much. The WD hard disk is less than a year old.
Are there any HD scanning programs you'd recommend? I've used scandisc in the past with XP. Currently using vista 32.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the help. I've been running the vista program as you mentioned, but I never get to step 6. I choose all the options you suggest, but after that vista simply says it's attempting to repair my computer. After about 5 minutes it gives me a report about all the things it checked and repaired. Every time I read the report, it says it could not fix my error. After 2-3 attempts with the same failure report, I am able to reboot. I've done this many times in the past.

I ran the vista disk error program(by right clicking on the HD icon in computer section and selecting properties-tools). I left the room(it takes about 40 minutes) and came back later to find that the computer had finished and attempted to reboot. I could not reboot. After 10 attempts at restoring, I ran the vista program on the disc as discussed above, was told the error could not be fixed twice, but was able to reboot.

I'm going to try the WD program next.

Thanks again for the help.

I highly doubt that this is your problem but I'll post anyway. I had something similar happen about 3 weeks ago. The PC would not boot except about every 10th reboot and then would take up to 20 minutes to boot. I tried reinstalling windows with no luck as I could not even format the drive. I ran the Seagate tools and everything looked good. I replaced the ram and boom, everything started working again (or so I thought).

The PC ran OK for about 10 minutes and then started freezing. After trying to reinstall Windows (again) and trying 3 times to format, I opened the case to replace the ram one more time and while in there, I touched the SATA cable to the drive and it wiggled alot. Strange I thought but upon inspection, it was cracked but working (barely). I replaced the cable and it's been flawless since then.

Again, probably not your problem but posted just in case anyone else might have this issue.

Good luck.

Checking the cable can't hurt. It sure seems like a HD error. After I did the scan disk and fix program I had two programs not working. I had to reinstall McAfee antivirus and my driver for my dvd player was not working.

Anyone know my odds of Western Digital replacing my HD? I bought it in late March 2008 new and the problems start in 2/2009.

Thanks again for all the help.

You can use this to see if your drive is still under warranty:

I wanted to update the situation:

I haven't had any crashes recently. I still can't get my lite on dvdrw lh-20a1s serial ata to be recognized. It's not listed under the drives section under computer. In device manager it has an error sign. Under properties it says:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39). "

When I use the update driver, it tells me I have the most recent driver. When I do a manual attempt, it says the same thing. When I unistall it, at restart the computer tries to install the driver, but says "fail" afterwards.

I have:
1) checked and changed the sata cable to the dvd player
2) moved the sata cable to another sata port
3) replaced the dvd drive with a spare of the same type
4) checked, but not changed the sata cable to the hard drive
5) cut my hand doing this

I'm still thinking about replacing the hard disk, but if there is anything else to try, please let me know.

Thanks for all your replies.

There is a tool that microsoft has on their websites that fixes the issue of drives not being seen in my computer but has a warning in system properties. I used it to fix someones computer then both drives they had showed in my computer. I think the issue lied with some of software program like roxio for example installs registry information in the upper and/lower filters preventing the drive from coming back.

I know you have vista but I wonder if Doug Knox xp-cd-dvd fix helps. you can also search for a .reg file called cdgone.reg which should reset the filter settings in the registry. Microsoft has a tool on their site as well.
