Ok, here's the deal. The PC I built is about a year and a half old. Has run great. However, early this week when I booted up it automatically went into Chkdsk. I am running Windows XP SP2. I would bypass this and go into my computer with no problem. I ran Chkdsk /x to not perform Chkdsk on startup and everything was fine.
Now, a few days later I start up and Windows is just whacky as can be. Some programs won't load. Some will. When I double clicked on Internet Explorer it would not open, but show as a process in Task Manager. When I would shutdown, it would finally popup for a brief second, but I was shutting down. It's like the memory finally threw everything out there.
Well I'm not sure if Windows is bad, the hard drive is bad, the motherboard is bad, or the RAM is bad. Here's where I hope some of you come in. I don't have spare parts, so for me to fix this I want to be right cuz it's money out of my pocket.
I put a hard drive health monitor on the computer in safe mode and it told me the health was great, then the health was poor, then it was great again. Not too good of a tool, but I couldn't find much. So I was hoping some of you could give me some tools to narrow down the problem. I really am thinking it is the HDD, which sucks, because God only knows where my Windows XP disk is now and I really don't feel like buying it again. And I can't use WinDIAG or Mem86 because I don't have a floppy drive.
So anything you can suggest here would be great. Thanks.
