Windows ME And AOL

I just purchased the full fersion of Windows ME from Best Buy, and the clerk there said Windows ME does not work with AOL. Is this true, or was she blowing smoke? Anyone using WinME and AOL, I'd like to hear from you. Any thoughts? I haven't finished building my computer yet, so I can't test it.

Second of all, you said Best Buy employee. I have not yet heard of many things at all not working under WinME. Things like Symantec's products for one, MDK2 for 2 (with a simple fix), and something as HUGE as AOL.. if that didn't work we would know of it by now and I'm sure there would be a fix.

Based on previous experiences, Best Buy employees or even other electronic store type sales folks aren't the best source for technical information.

Check MS's WinME site, they have a section about WinME and AOL.

If AOL doesn't work on WinMe, I GARENTEE that aol will fix that one way or another (even if it requires duct tape). AOL would loose a lot of revenue if thier software didn't run on the only consumer version of Windows that Microsoft is making/shipping.

There were some conflicts with WinME and AOL as of 4 weeks ago. (A friend of mine dumped WinME because it wouldn't work with his AOL. Talk about mixed up priorities!!!)

Back then he told me that AOL techs acknowledged the conflict and said they were working on a patch. I don't have a clue as to the current status of the conflict.

Sign up to be a beta tester. That's what I did when I found out the hard way that aol didn't work with 2000 at first. Either way, I'm using 6.0 right now with ME and 2000

There is a problem with AOL locking up under Win ME and Microsoft does have fix for it, I think you have to download a new winsock file and replace the old one with it............

Im running WimMe and AOL5 works fine, works the same as in Win98se.

AOL just came out with a version for Win2K. You might want to try installing this instead. Download you a copy under the keyword "upgrade." However, according to them you have to be running Win2K to download this version. The server will still say that it is version 5.0, but go ahead and download anyway. Been working fine for me for a long time now. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

I see nothing wrong with AOL, in fact I have been using it for over 3 years now. Of course I do NOT use the 56K dialup, I connect thru my cable modem. WinME works fine with AOL 5 &amp; 6.

According to Microsoft's site, there is only a problem with WinME and AOL when using WDM(Windows driver model) modems. I think this means windows-only modems, but I could be wrong. That would explain why people don't have probs with cable modems or 28.8 modems, or any hardware-based modem for that matter. The solutions seems to be a new Ccport.sys file dated 8/23 that you can only get thru Microsoft(that haven't regressively tested it yet). Unfortunately, you have to call tech support or email them and be charged for the support, I think you get two free support calls with a new OS purchase but you have to register it first. Does anyone have this file? I don't like to register!
