I just upgraded our old office server from WinNT Server to Win2k Server but am having problems with the Win2k clients. The network is setup as a 8 computer workgroup (6 Win2k, 1 Win2k Server, 1 WinMe). However, the Win2k Clients are very slow when they access our customer application on the server but the WinMe client has no problem at all and accesses the shared drive off the server right away.

Please help, thanks.

Are you running a DNS server on the Windows 2000 server? Name resolution could be an issue. Whats in your Event log under System, if anything...

Tried the Winguides tweak and that didn't work.

I have DNS Server stopped but when I set the IP 10.0.0.1 and try to leave the DNS Server blank it does not let me and assigns a DNS Server IP of 127.0.0.1. However, I can leave it blank in the clients though. I'm a noob, please help.

Setting the DNS servers DNS settings to loopback is fine as it is the one that has to resolve the lookups anyways. Make sure you have a good fully qualified domain name, or FQDN (server1.domain.com is a FQDN. server1 is the computername, domain is the domainname, and .com is the root domain).

If you do an nslookup from the command line of one of your 2k clients what do you get? You should get a response from your dns server.

After nslookup it says:

*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: Unknown
Address: 127.0.0.1

I don't believe you have DNS setup correctly.

To test if this is an DNS issue, just update your hosts and lmhosts file on one of the W2K Client.

hosts format is (lmhost is similar)

x.x.x.x nameofserver

for example:

192.168.123.1 server1

look at the example hosts.sam and lmhosts in \winnt\system32\drivers\etc

Try ping the server by IP & name.

Are the clients machines configure to accept DNS automatically under TCP/IP?

Is the DNS server Allow dynamics updates?
Check: MMC > DNS > your_DNS_server > Forward Lookup Zones > your_domain.com > Action > Properties > General > Allow dynamics updates: Only secure updates

At the client machines try: ipconfig /registerdns or ipconfig /registerdns [adapter]
Then check the Event Viewer in 15 min for error.

At the client machines try: ipconfig /renew to see if you can renew the IP address
also check Event Viewer for error.

At the DNS server try cheking the Forward Lookup Zones to see if the clients machines are registered. If registerdns didn't register the client you can try to add the client Host (A) manually.

Manually add Host to Forward Lookup Zones: MMC > DNS > your_DNS_server > Forward Lookup Zones > your_domain.com > Action > New Host > Location: your_domain.com > Name > your_client_machine_name > IP address: your_client_machine_IP
