I'm having this quite annoying problem with Windows ME. It won't restart! Every time a program has to reboot, it'll act like it's shutting down, go to a black screen and stay there. The same thing happens whenever I go to Start->Shut Down->Restart. Has anybody else had this problem and been able to fix it?

Give your system specs. What does it do when you shut down? How did you load it? If you give this as a start then maybe I can give you a hand

This can get complicated but you need to start a process of elimination....

First thing to try is to remove everything that starts up in MSCONFIG. If it then works ok, enable one by one untill the problem returns. I would also change your video drivers to the DEFAULT 640X480 16 color.

Sounds to me like a conflict, bad driver or program causing this problem.

And do what Panther505 said

Ahhhh yes, this is why year after year we are stuck on the same kernel O/S. The average person simply can't work out little bugs that usually follow a "change design."

I am not a Mac user, but love the idea that Xis not going to be "backwards-compatible".... This forces people to eventually upgrade and "make things work," the end result is a better O/S.

I had the same problem...switched to win2k and I'm much happier now. I narrowed it down to being one of the Product Updates from Microsoft. I didn't have the problem for months using ME, but now I'd have it if I tried to install on a freshly formatted drive with only the IE5.5 and critical updates installed. =(

My system: P3V4X, 600e@800, 256MB ram, voodoo3 3k, sb live, kingston and smc NICs, maxtor hds. If you make an attempt to find the problem driver/update, maybe this can help you...good luck.

Every time I try to restart in any kind of way, it'll act like it's going to shut down, but then the screen goes black and it hangs. I can hit the restart button, and it works fine, with no scandisk at start up like normally happens after a bad restart without a shutdown.

My system specs:
Intel PIII 1ghz
Asus CUSL2 Mobo
Mushkin 256mb High Performance PC133 Memory
CL TNT2 Ultra
CL SB Live Platinum 5.1
Netgear FA311 PCI ethernet card
Windows ME Full Install
MS Office 2000

WSLove,

What PC Spec is the Mobo? 98 or 99? I would suggest diabling all of the Power Management in the BIOS also. Has the system been doing this since you loaded it or only recently started? It sounds as if the kernel thinks that the OS has shut down (no scan disk on start) but the system is not sending the final word to the PS. If you have only seen this recently (like after a BIOS upgrade) I would look to that as the possible problem. I will talk to a fellow Milly Beta tester and see if he can remember what else we saw other then video issues that caused this.

I think it's a 99...just got it a couple months ago. I disabled all the power mgt in bios, and try restarting, but it did the same thing. It's been doing it since I loaded ME. I had installed ME before and it did this for awhile, but then it stopped, don't know what happened. I reinstalled ME a few weeks ago when I put in a new hard drive, but now it's back to not restarting.

I tried to get to ASUS last night to look up the info on the board but could get to the web site. I will look today at work. Are you running the default milly drivers or are you running "updated" drivers from the vendor website??? I will add more later.

As far as I know, I'm running the ME drivers. I haven't downloaded or installed any other drivers for it.

I have a couple of suggestionss

#1. got to Intel's site and dwnld the newest drivers that they have and install

#2. disable the Power Mangement in the BIOS. Millennium handles the PM in either the OS or the BIOS not both (at least on the systems that I tested on)

#3 Install Device Drivers for all of the Adapters that you have- do not rely on the MS drivers..

Also look to see if you have a nohiber.txt on the root anywhere...

I have exactly the same problem - WinME won't restart. I think it must be something with the CUSL2 MB as I upgraded from Intel D815EEAL.
I have upgraded BIOS to version 1003, but still no change. Maybe I should install/uninstall some of that CUSL2 software that comes with the MB?

I had the same problem!! Don't now though!! I had to call Microsoft..... I got a guy who had a clue All I had to do was disable soundblaster pro emulation in device manager. It did take a half hours worth of long distance charges to find out, though.

For what it's worth I use an mx300 with aureal drivers.

WSlove,

Have you checked your hard drive for errors? Ran your anti-virus program? Have you recently defragged your hard drive. If you have installed a game or two they most likely are the problem programs.

In order for games to run faster the !@#$%&* programmars usually modify Windows DLL files so their program only runs faster or better. But it then screws up your entire system.

If you have games installed uninstall each one until the problem goes away.

I have WinME installed and do not have your problem.

actually, if I remember correctly, it's done this since I first installed ME and had nothing else on the HD.
