Thought I would pass this along.

Many of you may have experienced this issue if you're using ME on a fast machine. (900mhz+ and an ATA100 drive) But if you're getting bluescreens on shutdowns with this kind of setup in ME. Get this patch. For some unknown reason Microsoft has yet to release the patch to the general public but they have released it to OEM's. You can download it here from Micron's site. It's fixed the problem for a myself and a friend.
It's an official MS ME patch Q273017

MEATA100.exe Windows ME ATA100 patch

Enjoy!!!

i have a duron 650@766 in an A7V with ME, and get the error without an ATA100 drive. I am gonna try this patch, I'll post results for non-super-fast computers with same problem.

When I said bluescreen, I meant a classic windows bluescreen error, I don't remember what exactly what the error said. Sometimes people don't get the error, they just get scandisk running when they reboot.

Yeah hopefully it will work for you too, as I only have a ATA66 drive (on an ATA100 controller though) yet I was experiencing the issue sometimes.

I finally found the Microsoft support page for this issue.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q273/0/17.ASP

"CAUSE
During the shutdown process, the contents of the virtual cache are written to the destination device. If the destination device is an Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard disk, data may be written to the hard disk's onboard cache but not to the disk itself. When this occurs, the data is lost from the cache when the computer turns off."

The patch includes an update of this file
9/21/2000 2:46p 4.10.3002 185,910 Ifsmgr.vxd Windows Millennium
Edition

and this registry entry...

"NOTE: For the updated Ifsmgr.vxd driver to add the necessary delay during shutdown, the following registry value is required. The CacheWriteDelay value specifies the number of milliseconds of required delay.

Start Registry Editor.

Locate and click the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CurrentVersion
On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

Value Name: CacheWriteDelay
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value: 2000

Quit Registry Editor."

It also said this can occur in 98SE interstingly enough...
