Windows ME shutdown errors.

Whenever I shut down windows me, I get vxd errors. Anyone else have this problem?

YES !!! I get the same error message every time i try to shutdown my pc, something like "Windows Protection Error". Of course, every time i turn on my pc, scandisk starts checking for errors. What i don't understand is that i installed ME a second time to check for that shutdonw error and didn't get it... at first. A few days of using ME and the damn problem came back. How about you ?

I got almost the same problem.

I did a clean install of Windows-Me and when I try to shut it up, it just freezes.

Any one has a solution to the problem?

(What the hell is the problem with Win-Me ?)

There have been similar posts as these on the forums for the past week. One thing I see in common on both of your setups is an Nvidia-based video card. Do you guys have the newest v6.18 drivers installed? Many people have found problems with these drivers and ME, try backing up to the v5.22 drivers or some of the new leaked Nvidia drivers, it may solve your problem.

i used to get that problem when i had an nvidia card, i broke that card so now im using some ATI card and i dont get the problem anymore.

this is a problem which occurs when the drivers of the graphic card and the sound card drivers get mismatched in ,
it really is poor in fixing these things
get new drivers ! the only solution

 

I had some weird shutdown errors sometime after a modem lockup or like a long night of diablo or UT.
It simply says:

Windows error.
Computer must be shutdown!

thats it, doenst come up that much.
6.18 ref drivers are working fine for me on a geforce 256srd.
People say the MS vanta drivers are better to use, but I cant overclock with them.

I had trouble upgrading from 98Se and had to format but after that everything is rock solid. Using NVIDIA 6.26

I had a lot of trouble with a upgrade from 98 to ME. I reinstalled on a fresh format and stability incresed but it was nowhere rock-solid. i still had shutdown problems and would get a scandisk after every cold boot. I believe the problem with the blue screens and scandisk on startup are due to a problem with fast shutdown, (which microsoft supposedly fixed in ME) I had that same problem in 98SE, but after disabling fast shutdown the blue screens and scandisk at start stopped. Does anyone know how to disable fast shutdown in ME? It should fix the problem.

Do u guys have the VIA chipset?
if so, i think u should install the 4in1 update from via.
After that, install ur video card's drivers. Probably would get rid of the shutdown problem

I was having a number of start up and shut down problem and traced it to a program in the startup called timesink/adgateway which was a program that automatically post ads to a shareware program. By entering the accessory tool section i was able to uncheck a startup box and the problem stopped.

basically what i found out is all 6.xx drivers will give you windows protection errors during shutdown only after a 3d game.so in other words if you boot your computer up then shutdown you wont get that error.this is what i had to do to work around it before you want to shutdown i would restart and then shutdown which is fine.because i didnt play no 3d games.(so if your having the shutdown problems and you dont think its the drivers give it a try,try running 3dmark2000 once go play UT or quake for 20min and then shutdown more in likely you will get windows protection error.now try restarting and then shutdown viola shutsdown perfect.but i hate doing that so i stuck with 5.32 until they fix it properly

I had a very sick Win98 SE on one computer. That was mainly due to several PacBell kid techs who came over to install DSL and screwed it all up. After that I could not boot up to Win98 SE unless I went into the Safe menu and selected to select each file loaded and hit Enter. That worked and it booted up. My scanner would not work correctly and then it crashed '98 SE. Plus other problem.

The good news is I upgraded to Win ME OVER a sick Win98 SE and the result was now I have a perfect running Win ME. My scanner works perfectly again. ME boots up perfectly with no error messages. I use to get monitor error messages. Don't get them anymore.

Installing WinMe over Win98 solved every problem I had with that computer which makes me extremely happy with that easy installation upgrade.

It has an Asus mobo, a K-III AMD 450 MHz cpu. A Matrox G400 VGA card with 32 megs RAM. My computer RAM IS 128 MEGS.

I am not a gamer so I do not have the problems with games and game VGA cards some persons are having.

Am I happy with Win ME? You bet I am.
