Windows Media Player 10 Beta is out!!

Thanks for the heads-up. I couldn't care less whether the Anal Retentive Mod Poser Squad thinks it's technically a Hot Deal or not. I didn't know about it, and you gave some useful information.

You don't even know what "beta" software means, do you? Do you think that it is a synonym for "free"? (Btw, how do you "port" hardware?)

For me, MS software == buggy, and MS beta software == even more buggy.

Check out the Neowin forums, some people have had severe problems with WMP 10 beta. I really wouldn't suggest that anyone install this onto their "main" system.

Good call, SgtZulu. That's one of the reasons that I haven't installed any version of WMP past the 6.4 that W2K ships with either.

Truthfully, WMP 10 is going to be MS's attempt to take over and monopolize the music-download market, they are launching their own music-download service like iTunes and Rhapsody. Integrating WMP with Windows just gives them a bigger and more unfair competitive advantage, due to their illegal monopoly on desktop OSes.

Btw, to those that said that WMP has always been free and will always be free - consider that MS is no longer making IE upgrades "free" - you will have to buy a new OS to get the newer version. I have no doubt that should WMP corner the market enough, that MS will do likewise with it. Argueably, both WMP and IE are not "free", in any sense of the word.

Since nobody answered my question yet... I'm pretty positive that it's still the same technical beta that was released earlier in the month. MS has the product page on it.

WMP 9 crashes my computer more than any other program I run. So hopefully this new version will be better. The program crashing just reminds me that it's MS and Bill Gates. I've been used to it since W95.

I'm going to jump in and say I think this is hot, thanks for the post.

I don't use WMP much, but I know people on the team and have been looking forward to a new release to see what they might have improved.

WMP9 was all messed up for me. I couldn't play xvid files no matter what - they worked fine in all other places. Just tried WMP10 and I can finally play xvid files again. So thanks!

However my other problem is still present. Media Player always starts up maximized - well not maximized but the window takes up the full screen. I resize the window and close it, but when I re-open it, its back to being the full screen size again. Its extremely annoying. Anyone know why it does this and what I'm missing?

I think that article is out of date with wmp9 and 10. When you install them, it asks you if you want to turn any of those features on (the features the article was complaining about).

NHL 2003 initial release did not work because of Windows Media Player 9 that was out at the time. NHL 2003 would lock up at a black Windows Media Player 9 screen on startup.

Windows Media Player version 9 could not be uninstalled and prevented games like NHL 2003 from working.

Reinstalling Windows (and not updating Windows Media Player to version 9) was the only way to fix the problem.


Ever since then I didn't upgrade to version 9 and am reluctant to do so with version 10.
Browsing the web, I see there's people reporting they regret updating to version 10 and having major problems not being able to uninstall version 10.

You can create an image in about 10 minutes (or less) and play around with betas or any other risky software that you think you might like to try. The beauty of it is, your system can be perfectly restored in about 10 minutes or less if a blow up occurs. I have used computers for about 20 years now, and Powerquest Drive image is certainly the best/most valuable software program I have ever purchased. I consider this "warm". Image your system first, before playing with this BETA. I truely don't understand why so many people hate Microsoft. WinXP is the best O/S so far for the PC. (And yes, I have tried AND work with many flavors of Linux). Still I prefer Microsoft OS over Linux any day. Maybe one day, when Linux matures and gets user friendly for "mom and pop", and retail stores have 4-5 isles of Linux software for sale, then I may consider.

And I'm also FOR copy protection and DRM! The music industry may charge a lot for CD's, but musicians need to make money too. I wouldn't want anyone to steal my stuff, be it software or music recordings.

Darn right. In fact, there is a Hot Deal on Drive Image at CompUSA this week. FAR after two $30 rebates for upgraders; and $30 if you're not upgrading.

I feel the same way - I use several flavors of Linux at work along with OpenBSD, FreeBSD, HPUX, Solaris, AIX, Win2k AS, and Win2003. When it comes to a home PC I chose WinXP and MS Office 2003.

I install WinXP sp1 and other Microsoft software (no 3rd party stuff), configure it the way I like it and my system is rock solid. Then I take a image my partition, just so I can load-up 3rd party software and betas without having to worry about cleaning up the system after trying to remove them.

Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 is my default viewer, I converted my 300+ CD to MP3 using MusicMatch 2 years ago, and it does everything I want quickly and cleanly.

10 minutes? Doesn't the size of your boot drive/partition determine this? You not going to image a full 120GB partition in 10 minutes,
