Windows Media Player crashing

So, this is an eerie problem. Whenever I try to open, play any song, or any audio file in windows media player, it crashes: says media player has stopped working. I've already tried rebooting, that didn't do a thing.
I didn't do anything different yesterday, or earlier today when it was working perfectly. Now this is happening.

I usual only use media player, as it is fine for me. Running on Windows 10 here.

all audio devices are connected and working properly too.

Start by making sure it's only Windows Media Player. Does another app like VLC do it?Did this start recently, or did it start when you started on 10? Does it crash right when you start the program, or does it play for a bit and then stop? BTW, Windows Media Player is still my favorite as well. Still a great program, even in 10.

No it just says windows media player has stopped working. and crashes

I tried Groove music and it works okay there, but ugh, that app isn't suiting me well though, I want windows media player back!
This problem just came from the blue. Literary. Yes it crashes when I start it up, even by manually starting it up by click on the icon, it crashes.

And yes, it will play for a bit then stop working.

No I haven't done anything like that.

Go to command prompt (run as administrator) and type sfc /scannow.

See now it really doesn't make any sense. Windows Media player is working fine now. I didn't do anything to the pc.

This is starting to sound like bad RAM or corrupted files.

see! it happened again, its happening again! media player is back to the basics: crashing again.
Yet again. again, I didn't do anything!

it's happening to me too , as soon as i launch wmp it crashes. I have Windows 10 too , so i may suspect that's related to the last big windows update . Other programs work fine.

Does it only occur on certain audio formats (e.g. aac, mp3, etc)? You can tell based on the extension of the file you're playing if it doesn't show up in WMP.

WMP chokes and crashes with all my .flac files. I can still open them in VLC and 5KPlayer, seriously switch to these free open source would be better off.

foobar2000[1] isn't open source but it really is one of the best music/audio players available. I realize it's only for audio content but since that's what the thread was originally about I thought I'd plug it.
