I am entangled, my brother is in Spain and he told me about a Messenger we could use to chat, I assumed it was Windows Messenger so I went, enabled it and signed in. After having signed I saw my user is shared with another application called MSN Messenger you can get access to not just from your PC but also from the web.

I am positive they are different applications just because when I tried to get the latest version I noticed Windows Messenger for XP is 4.7 while MSN Messenger for XP is 5.0.

I want to be able to chat with my brother but also want to know the difference and relationship between the 2 applications (at least I see they share the username and passwords).

Is there anybody willing to lose some time elaborating something?

Thanks Gustavo.-

There's a difference, all right. MSN is a bug-ridden, bloated, slow piece of sh*t and Windows Messenger is just an annoyance that can be gotten rid of quite easily.:disgust:

Yup, it certainly can, just like this :
Start --> Run
Type "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"
Now you'll see MSN being uninstalled from XP, now all you need to do is reboot your machine (if it asks) and no more MSN, now just use Trillian or something else.

MSN Messenger uses different APIs than the older versions. As a result, integration with Outlook Express is still done with v4.7. Same thing for the Sidewinder GameVoice. However, if you use MSN Explorer 7.0, that "browser" will integrate with both (but not if v5.0 is installed...it will use v5.0 by default if it's there).

MSN Messenger has a slightly more polished UI, and has some accessibility improvements. For example, the two tabs in the buddy picker are now buttons, making it easier for people without mice to use.

MSN Messenger has a newer RTC dll for A/V conferencing.

One benefit of having both is that you can logon both at the same time, with different accounts. For example, this way you can have your co-workers in v4.7 while your friends and family can be in v5.0.

Otherwise, you really won't see much of a difference between the two.
