Can anyone tell me why is it that for the last 3 months all my networking between my home pc and laptops has been working fine, now today i turn on my pc and all I can get to is my own pc?

This has happened before a few times and to get the friking thing working was like a 10 hr job trying to fix it.

nothing has changed for the last 2 weeks on any pc, all the internet is working on each computer fine, the router is giving internal ip's the same as it was for the last 3 months.

What's the deal with this poxy windows networking where it decides to one day not work again when nothing has been changed at all?

Perhaps your router/switch busted. Pick up an Xterasys, the installation/management on those are real easy/streamlined.

Client for Microsoft Networks is checked in the Local Area Connection Properties?
There are no software firewalls running at the moment (including XP's built in firewall)?
The machines can ping each other?

Client for msoft networks installed on both

no firewalls running

machines can both ping their 127.0.0.1.

The main pc can't ping the laptop and the laptop gets a error of

"Ping transmit failed error code 65"

Any idea on that?

Yea I saw that but the firewall is turned off and none of the computers have zonealarm.

However the laptop did have it but was uninstalled ages ago, do you think it left something in the reg that may be causing the problem?

ZA was notorious about leaving stuff behind (whether it still does that or not I can't say). Can the laptop ping it's non-loopback ip?

Yea it's 127.0.0.1 is ok with no loss

annoying to say the least this is lol

TCP should be ok since both can access the net no prob (i think )

Also the main pc can now see it's own network (but can't connect to the laptop) while the laptop can't see itself or the main pc.

That's loopback.

ping isn't TCP.

So the problem is with the laptop. Maybe search around for ZA removal information, or reinstall it to see if that helps.

TCP/Ping Lol, i'm learning hehehe

ive looked at the net for uninstall info, don't really help since it's been uninstalled.

I'm going to try to reinstall with a clean install of ZA to overwrite the old data (that shouldn't be there).

And i will let you know in a moment.

P.s thx for all your help by the way.

Ah well we have the problem solved and backed into a corner.

Interesting , reinstalling ZA and overwriting all the older install allows not only the ping (which is successful btw) but all access to both pc's are now working and working fine.

I wonder why uninstalling the ZA didn't cause this problem untill now? plus it goes to show that, as you stated "it leaves lots of crap in the reg" which causes the problem.

Thx for all your help on this, I really appreciate it.

Now do i try to uninstall ZA or leave it in there lol.

It is the same principle as with your car it might work for years, and then something might get wrong ""Suddenly".

My long time experience with Networking shows that ZA is a great Firewall for "One Single" computer.

Otherwise when it comes to LAN there are three groups of users.

1. That had Troubles with ZoneAlarm.

2. That having Troubles with ZoneAlarm.

3. That would have Troubles with ZoneAlarm.

Currently, as far as my Experience shows (this could be different in the future according to new releases of software and free availability of the current ones).

The Best Free Security suit for Windows might be.

Upgrade your Windows XP to SP2. and then use.

1. Kerio v215.

Kerio is very easy to configure, it is light on resources, and does what need to be done.

Kerio has a newer version of the Firewall; do no get tempted stick with the above it is a better product.

2. AntiVir Personal Edition.

AntiVir has very high rating for detecting Virus, and does better then other Antivirus program blocking Trojans.

3. Microsoft AntiSpyb1

It was judged by many independent reviewers as the best of its kind.

I also switched my firewall to Outpost, (on the main Pc) the laptop still has ZA (deciding whether to uninstall it since it's all working again)

Mind you I have heard some good things abot Kerio too.
thanks for the info jack.

An antivirus update? I have seen this happen with McAfee Enterprise on some servers at work that stopped sending notifications after an update.

Definately something to do with Zonealarm's leaving something after it uninstalled. As I said I reinstalled it with a clean install over all exsisting settings and it now all works.
