This morning there was a message about my copy of Windows 7 was not a genuine copy and when I clicked on it i was led to a website to download something from MS and to install it. It something did something, not sure what, and that was that. However my copy of Windows 7 is the real thing but I did change the motherboard....could this have caused this message to appear?

Yes changing the mother board could have caused this message. That is exactly what happened to me when I sent my sager in for service and the MB was swapped.

good point Charlie 98!

Where did the message pop up at? Aside from the hardware change (how long ago was that?) it sounds like a malware popup.

The "install it" does make it sound like malware, but it could just be the way you are presenting it. Could have been the "Microsoft Genuine Advantage" notification software.

The last motherboard upgrade that cause me this type of thing involved calling the supplied number and supplying numbers to Microsoft.

If everything is working fine, I wouldn't worry about it.

yes now that you mention it it could be malware. Normally MS do not approach like this with popups. Luckily I made a complete system back up about 2.5 weeks ago so this is the image I will restore.

Let us know how it works out.

Have you tried to run any AV sweeps with the current system?

I ordered a new copy of windows 7, its asking for a new serial number. I thought I could just swap the motherboard and all would be good however the OS is tied to a particular MB. Not wanting to be illegal I ordered a another copy of the OS.

Was your initial copy of Win 7 an OEM or a Retail version?
If it is OEM then yes, you did the right thing by ordering another copy. If it was Retail however, you can install and activate on several different hardware changes as long as the old motherboard doesn't have a copy running on it as well.

it is an OEM copy. And the one I ordered is OEM as well but I only need 1 installation.

Technically it is, but a quick call to MS might have allowed you to continue on with the new mobo and old key... I just did it with my main PC.

I could do that but i do have 2 computers to run...I did need another copy to remain legal.

Let me tell you what happened to me recently with my retail version of vista ultimate. MS blocked it out saying that I had abused it, a retail version and refused to remove the block so I could keep on using it. I spent several hours on the phone with them attempting to get them to understand that it was a retail not oem version but they didn't care. They capped it at 23 installs that includes hardware changes that required reactivation. Retail isn't what it used to be is all that I am saying. I figure that my copy of windows 7 x64 ultimate will be next on the block list since I've swapped stuff out so much with failures and all.

Got this on a new Dell workstation that I had just setup. I think it is the return of WGA notification.

edit- might be an older update, KB971033
