Yes, it will work!

Have you checked that maybe you're out of space on the phone? I believe the 520 only comes with 8 GB storage, so you might have to clear some first.
Yes, some things have to be installed on the phone's storage, not the microSD card, I sometimes get messages to that effect when installing apps. I'll check the storage now.

Edit:

Phone: 6.77GB used 469.88MB free
64GB SD card: 57.56GB used 912.38MB free

Most of the SD card storage is MP3s.

Everything is set (according to Storage Sense) to store to the SD card. I just uninstalled 1/2 dozen apps and the phone is showing 660MB free.

I'm rebooting the phone and will immediately try backup.

It again goes to "Backing up... 98%" ... sits there for 3-4 minutes and then says there was a problem backing up settings, try again later. D:

When I go to apply to unlock the phone, after agreeing and hitting [Continue] the first field to fill out is AT&T Wireless Number, the second is IMEI Number. The second I can get from the box. It says all fields are required. Should I put in my current cell number, which is through my AT&T MVNO and is in use with my Lumia 520?

Oh, OK, I had to click Non AT&T Mobility Customer, then the phone number field disappeared. That was kind of confusing. I think I'm good now...

Just be sure to keep the SIM out until its done. I got weak and put my sim in my 640 for just a minute and an hour later I got an email that they couldn't unlock it for that reason.

I love this phone, been using it as a daily driver with Windows 10 for weeks.

The phone will remain in its never-opened plastic dungeon until I hear from AT&T about my unlock request. I think I went through the hoops unscathed, not a simple matter.

Your unlock request is in review now. Please allow two business days to process it.

We’ll send you an email message soon with the status of your request, or check it yourself on the Device Unlock Status Portal .

Remember that your request number is <##########> . Please keep this information for future reference.

FYI: I tried restoring a 925 backup to a 640 and it messed up my start screen (can't even explain what happened, really weird, like half the screen was unusable, should have saved a screenshot). So restoring a backup might not work for you anyway.

Would not surprise me. Well, I can always wipe and start from scratch. My 520 is actually, my second 520, the first one was replaced under warranty because the USB connection stopped working. So, I restored my backup to the new 520. Worked OK. But to a 640, might not. The situation is, of course, complicated by the fact that my current 520 is incapable of creating a current backup, as I say. Maybe I can fix that, maybe not, before I try a restore. Fact is, most all of the apps I use on a regular basis were already on the phone 7 months ago, and the backup that's out there is from back then. My settings? Well, presumably I can reset them, so it wouldn't seem to be a critical matter that I won't have my current settings.

Mainly, I do this stuff:

Listen to music... the app (I think) is X box, somehow. I think it was on there initially

Amazing Weather HD (great app)

One of my battery apps (of which I have ~5) is nice

Kindle Books

MyAppFree

New York Times

Camera (and camera roll), built in stuff, I think
--------

I have other apps, some of them really neat, a bunch that I should use, but don't much... yet, Evernote included, and others...

I really have too many apps (via MyAppFree), many of which are fluff, many probably well worth checking out but I haven't.

I should do more internet searching, Google, etc., but am not in the habit. I should! I do almost all of stuff like that with my PCs.

I was successful in my application for an unlock code for my as-yet-unopened Windows Lumia 640 LTE 4G AT&T phone. I've yet to unlock it. Seems simple enough, the instructions in this thread are what I figure to do shortly:

No sim needed in the phone at all to call up the unlock screen.
DO not turn on the phone, remove the ATT sim before anything. Now you are safe.
Boot the phone, get past first "No Sim" error by closing.
Tap the "Phone" icon to bring up Sim error again and close again.
You can now access the dial pad, dial ##7820# and you will get the
unlock screen. Enter Unlock Code and hit enter.
Wait about a minute or so... you should then see the "Unlocked" padlock screen.
Reboot the phone. You are done. You can redial the ##7820# to verify it is still unlocked

What has me wondering is the other instructions at the website SD Thread right after the unlock instructions. There it's discussed how to de-brand and flash T-Mobile ROM. What's that about? I presume that after unlocking you could just slip a T-Mobile SIM into the phone and it will work on T-Mobile's network. What's de-branding, why would someone do it?

First thing I did was remove the SIM, then put in battery. Didn't boot when pressing the on-button, just showed Microsoft briefly, went blank. So, I connected it the my laptop via cable and pressed on button again, it booted.

I don't see a "Phone" icon after closing the "No Sim" error. After closing the "No Sim" error, I'm prompted to choose among available wifi networks, 5 of them, the first of which is mine. I could do that, I'm sure I'd have to provide my key, or I can "skip." Should I skip this step? If I do, I'm asked if I want to use wifi sense. Those steps are not shown above. I'm not seeing a second no sim error message... not yet. I haven't chosen a wifi network yet or made a wifi sense decision.

Edit: OK, I connected to my wifi network and for the time being didn't opt to automatically connect to wifi networks. As it said, they may not be secure, I can opt to connect later if desired, I assume this is in settings.

Now I'm asked to choose phone settings: [recommended] [custom]

Sheesh, why this stuff now? I want to unlock the phone before I do much more.

I'm at the point where it asks me if I want reset protection, have not yet signed into my Microsoft Account. I'll wait for some reply(s) here before continuing. I don't want to screw this up.

Trying to unlock phone. Here are the recommended steps:

Easiest way is to borrow someones non ATT sim for 30 seconds to pop in the phone, it will prompt for the code, enter it, reboot, done.

Yes, I figured this to be the case. However, I don't know that I know anyone who has one. Seems like most people around here have iPhones or are on Verizon. Maybe if I go into a T-Mobile store they will be so kind as to lend me one for a minute.

You just need to go through the regular setup since it is a new phone. Just go through everything, don't worry about unlocking yet. Unlocking doesn't actually do anything to the phone settings, it just lets you use non-AT&T SIM cards. Once it is finished you will drop to the normal start screen where you can open the phone dialer and perform the unlock steps.

Regarding the debranding/flashing. If you plan to use on T-Mobile (or other non-AT&T carriers) you will not get carrier specific features until you flash the carrier ROM. For T-Mobile, WiFi calling and LTE Band 12 support doesn't work until you flash the T-Mobile ROM. You CAN skip this step, everything will still work, except for those 2 features (maybe visual voicemail also, I forget).
