So, I have an appointment in Santa Rosa in a few days. I figure set up my Nokia 520's Here Drive app (maybe it's Here+ now, don't know they keep updating, changing the GPS apps) to take me there. I've been there before but it was 10 years ago. This time I have GPS going for me, fine. I set the destination:

3925 Old Redwood Hwy, Santa Rosa.

I'm home in Berkeley.

It says it's 50 miles. I ask it to "Drive to"

It is "finding your route"

Then it says 2:41hr.
140 mi

[start]

Huh?

It does this repeatedly. What gives? The Richmond San Rafael Bridge temporary closure??? Even that wouldn't explain changing a 50 mile trip to 140 miles.

I have no idea what route this thing has planned for me, but of course I'm not willing to find out if indeed it's going to take me on some crazy circuitous route. This app usually works but many's the time that it's asked me to do something crazy. Sometimes when I don't override it, I regret it.

"In an announcement today, HERE revealed that its maps app for Windows 10 will be removed from the desktop and phone stores on March, and the Windows Phone 8.1 version will only receive critical bug fixes."

Basically the usual big old middle finger for Windows Phone users. Don't worry just upgrade to Windows 10 mobile for the new maps app.. oh wait you only have 512MB ram and are never getting that...

Did you check in settings to make sure you don't have avoid toll roads, or freeways, or bridges, or etc, turned on?

Swipe up in the Drive app, settings lurk off the bottom of the screen iirc.

I never turn on that stuff, but I'll double check...

Crap, I really like my 520. No Windows 10 support? That sucks.

Well, I don't mind not upgrading the app as long as it works and they continue support upgrading the maps, that's the main thing.

I tried checking on mine, route in Maps from Berkeley to that address was 57 miles. But Drive only gets the destination from the map app, so it computed distance from my location. Think it was 2700+

Here makes no sense to me now the MS owns Nokia's mobile division. Why package two map apps?

What does the map feature say?

Every phone vendor does this. Apple stops support on older iPhones, same with Google. Most people still turn over their phones every 20 months so I'd be there aren't a ton of 520 users that are very concerned about software updates & app compatibility.

I had "toll roads" turned off, I guess that was it. Well, it's not a toll road but there is a toll bridge, I guess that counts as a toll road. So, I just turned toll roads on. Now, instead of saying 50 miles, then changing its mind to 140 miles it says 58 miles and doesn't change its mind.

Funny thing is when I got the thing 26 months ago there were at least two maps apps. Think they were called Here Drive and Here or something like that. There have been IIRC numerous Here betas offered up. I guess the Here Drive was if you were driving, the other if you were walking, commuting by other than car, on a bike.

It's been hard to keep up. Updates, new versions. I'd seen something a few weeks ago about no support for Here going forward, but that there would be another app. Maybe I won't even get that with the 520. Sucks. Well, I don't care maybe if it works, GPS was the reason I got this in the first place. I seldom use the phone for telephone calls, but I do use it. ... i.e. make calls, I almost never receive calls on it, probably more than anything because my coverage in the house is the worst I ever see anywhere. I called AT&T to complain a couple weeks ago and a guy talked to me for a while, I called my 3rd party (Airvoice Wireless, and they use the AT&T network) and they said that AT&T were doing some service on the system and I should call back later, but when I was talking to AT&T they didn't say that, so I don't think that's true. I haven't called Airvoice back. I kind of wonder/doubt they'll do anything about my bad service in the house, but I figured I should complain. If no one complains they won't do anything.

I don't use the phone for telephone calls very often, on average probably every 3 weeks! I use the other apps a lot, music, weather mainly, and occasionally the GPS.

My point is there is a perfectly functional GPS app in the windows phone under "maps". I see no need for a second app.
The MS mapping app can preload maps to save on data too.

I'm on AT&T now via Airvoice Wireless. I presume I might keep my account there (and minutes) and just switch phones using this? Accommodates 128GB card, a requirement for me (I have 64GB in mine now). I'm going to look into this... any more info appreciated.... Thanks!

Um, I assume I don't have to unlock this or buy unlocked version if I'm going to keep my current account. T-Mobile, when I checked 2+ years ago didn't get better service in my area than AT&T, or so it appeared from user reviews.

Maybe I should get an unlocked "international version?" I haven't been traveling but plan to.

Highly recommend the 640, it is a great phone for the price. It is $30, not much risk. It is easy to do an unlock request with ATT as long as you don't turn it on. https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/ choose non-ATT customer. Took 2 days for me to get the unlock code.

I am not sure if Airvoice sim will work in it without unlocking, always kind of fuzzy about this with pre-paid phones.

I to have the 640 and was unable to unlock it and use it on Cricket wireless. I did stick windows 10 on it and its pretty smooth and works really well. They just did a overhaul on the included "Maps" app that comes with Windows 10 mobile and looks alot better. Only problem is some of the games I have tried on it have very low FPS and freeze. Thats why I have the 1520 though as my daily driver though.

My Airvoice SIM worked in my 520, which was an AT&T Go Phone. Would it work in the 640? Anyway, I guess it would be smart to unlock the phone. I presume that would make it possible to use internationally (i.e. when I travel). I presume the Airvoice SIM would work in that too. I haven't done any international traveling since I was 2 years old!

Will all my 520 apps work with a 640? Can I just do a restore from my 520 backup?

Yeah on their website. Put that you aren't a ATT customer. It's takes like three days. Don't put in a sim until it's unlocked or you will be screwed.

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/
Please demystify this for me...

I just zipped (pedaled) over to BB and got it. It's in the unopened package. It comes with the GoPhone SIM, I don't know if that's inserted or not.

So, I leave the GoPhone SIM outside the phone and follow the instructions?

Another important question: I'm on the AT&T network now, through a 3rd party, Airvoice Wireless. After unlocking this 640 will I be able to use it using my Airvoice Wireless SIM on the AT&T network? Thanks for the help!

Yeah. Leave it out before turning it on to get needed info.

I think so. My ATT network not Go sim worked.

How to unlock, :

*** Do not turn on the phone with SIM card with which phone came or below steps may not work**

*****DO NOT OPEN THE BOX---THE NEEDED INFO IS ON A LABEL ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX****

Simple steps:
1. Go to below link and Accept terms and click Continue
https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/
2. It is very important to select "Non-AT&T Mobility customer"
3. Provide Basic details , IMEI and email address.
4. You you'll immediately receive email, YOU HAVE TO CONFIRM via the link in email.
5. Wait for your Unlock code to be delivered in email within 48 hrs.

There have been reports of 'generic'(gmail, ymail, hotmail) email addresses getting rejected. Use a non-generic(work ,edu) address if possible.

No sim needed in the phone at all to call up the unlock screen.
DO not turn on the phone, remove the ATT sim before anything. Now you are safe.
Boot the phone, get past first "No Sim" error by closing.
Tap the "Phone" icon to bring up Sim error again and close again.
You can now access the dial pad, dial ##7820# and you will get the
unlock screen. Enter Unlock Code and hit enter.
Wait about a minute or so... you should then see the "Unlocked" padlock screen.
Reboot the phone. You are done. You can redial the ##7820# to verify it is still unlocked

Yes! Put the GoPhone SIM aside. You don't need it. Keep it for a spare or something, in case in the future you need to activate a GoPhone account quickly, you already have a SIM card.

Leave the phone alone as well, just get the IMEI for the unlocking process. It should be on the box.

You can actually use it on Airvoice right away even without unlocking, but if you do that, the process in the linked page won't go through. The phone will be locked. It can still be used on AT&T or any other AT&T MVNOs such as Airvoice, H2O, or others, but you won't be able to use it on non-AT&T-based carriers.

You are a prince! Thank you!

Thanks to all for the help, I'm confident I can do it now. I'll do this in the AM, it's bedtime now.

I presume that after unlocking I can slip the Airvoice Wireless AT&T MVNO SIM in the phone and it will work. Just in case, I think I'll call Airvoice and sound them out about it.

Can I restore my apps and data from my latest 520 backup? I tried backing up my 520 a day or two ago and it kept failing! Don't know why, it would get to 98%, hang there and leave a message that "there was a problem backing up your settings, try again later." I was home, the wifi was strong. It still says "Last backed up 7 months ago." :'(

Have you checked that maybe you're out of space on the phone? I believe the 520 only comes with 8 GB storage, so you might have to clear some first.
