What causes Windows Protection Errors?? I heard hardware problems...???

Microsoft windows causes windows protection errors.

Unstable overclocking
Ram not being able to run at set speed
Heat
Drivers not compatible with hardware
4 in 1 drivers not installed on VIA based boards
AGP Bus speed too high for card
Windows O/S rot
Those are a few. Does setting the clock speed back down help?

I also had Windows protection error caused by a faulty CPU,it took me a long time to find this out first I thought it was ram,then harddrive,etc anyway I could not even reinstall the OS with BSOD or lockups & yes Windows protection error ,anyway I took it to a repair shop lucky the CPU was under warranty & was replaced free of charge(it was not overclocked).

Normally I would say a messed up harddrive,Faulty hardware will cause Windows protection error,btw I never had Windows protection error before & I`ve being using PC`s for over 7 years.

All a windows protection error means is that a program attempted to write an area of memory that it did not have access to. They can be caused by badly written programs, corrupted registries, hardware problems, etc. Can you be more specific and give some details about when the PE's occur?

An overheating cpu can cause a stack overflow, protection error. Driver and irq conflicts are the biggest cause i think. (cpu can cause) Windows 95 and a k6-2 350 +, always caused a protection error on install, it was a cpu timing issue, fixed by running the amd patch

Where did you read/hear about heat causing stack overflow problem? I would get it sometimes right after the desktop appeared and said increase the MinSPs in system.ini. I increased it to 8 and no more stack overflow. I sure its not cpu o/t since the temp is about 32C right after bootup. Just curious if you have any info on it.

Posted a board once , and it kept giving me the windows protection error , stack overflow, device failure initialization ios. (or something close to that) Turned out the heatsink fan would stop running after a couple of minutes and kill the windows install. So after umpteen times reinstalling , I opened the case and replaced the fan, and installed error free.
