Windows Protection Error

Hi guys,

After installing a new 40 gb Seagate U6 HDD as the primary master on a friend's computer, I attempted to do a clean install of Windows 98SE. But on the first restart during installation, after finishing the POST and showing the Windows 98SE default boot screen for a second or two, the screen went blank except for the: 'Windows protection error. You will need to restart your computer'

I tried installing it twice - but it was of no use. The exact same message at the same place.

What do I do? Anybody to give me a hand here? My friend is killing me!!

Please list rest of system specs...any ocing of cpu or ram???

It could be a ram problem or it may be a dirty disc underneath...yeah don't laugh!!! I had a smudge on the bottomn of my winxp disc hose a setup 2 times before I cleaned it then it read all the files it was supposed to...

Also clean install go with new install procedure...uninstall all pci cards except the vid card and then add them later one by one to make sure to avoid conflicts.

No overclocking.

Celery 266 Mhz
128 SDRAM etc...


Thanx, I'll do the setup from another disc and also check the RAM.
