I am trying to install windows to a new HDD i ordered from the Egg. Its a SATA drive, and i loaded the sata drivers at startup. The problem starts when i get to the drive selection screen.

As this was a new HDD, there were no partitions, so all that showed up was 'Unpartitioned Space'. So i selected it, and pressed enter, to go ahead and install windows to that area (in which it would automatically place a partition, and ask what file system i wanted to use on the next page).

However, i never got to the next page, when i hit enter to install, i got an error saying that the Partition was incompatabile with Windows. So i thought, Oh, i just needt o partition it manually for some reason. So i go back to the previous screen, partition the drive, and i still get the error when trying to install to the newly created partition.

I really need some help, is there anyway I can partition and format the drive with another utility?

I guess i could install to a differentdrive, and then ghost over, as i dont get this problem with my other HDD.

IDK,

Please Help

Is this the only computer? Can you throw that drive in another computer (already up), and slick it there, and then move it to the new computer??
Tas.

You might also try PArtitionMagic 8 (now Symantec) - it is a bootable CD and can delete and fix partitions w/o the OS being involved.

Nope, thats one of my issues. My comp is the only one in the house, and come to think of it, the only one out of anyone I know thats local, that has SATA support.

I might go get a trial version or w/e and try that out, thanks for the heads up.

newParadime:

What is the brand of the disk drive ? Also, why are you replacing drives, did you have problems with previous drive or is this just an upgrade ?

Are you sure you have the correct SATA drivers for your brand & model drive ?

How do you have the drive identified in the BIOS. I know that on one of my systems the drive has to be identified as a SCSI for it to work.

Have you tried to fdisk & format the drive with a windows 98 boot diskette ?

Good luck.

Award Bios

3.1.2.4 Virus Warning
This field protects the boot sector and partition table of your hard
disk drive. When this field is enabled, the Award BIOS will monitor
the boot sector and partition table of the hard disk drive. If an
attempt is made to write to the boot sector or partition table of
the hard disk drive, the BIOS will halt the system and an error
message will appear.

The trial version won't change your partitions. It will only show you how it works and show you what it would look like after you buy PM.
No Free Lunch With PM

The drive is a Seagate 7200.8 250gb Sata, yes it was an upgrade to get rid of a 80gbx2 RAID0.

Yes i am sure ihave the right drivers for my sata ADAPTER, you dont need a driver for a drive.

The drive is identified in the BIOS of my SATA adapter. I don't need to set the BIOS for a boot device to get windows to format and copy instalation files.

I have not tried to format the drive because i don't know how. I haven't even tried fdisk, as it wouldn't be able to see a SATA drive, right?

I will go check that out now, but I am almost 100% shure I have all the built in Virus Protection turned off.

Try formatting it then partition it again. Maybe you got a refurbished part by mistake, who knows.

This was a replacement, but I re-ordered a new item. I had Newegg refund my original defective order, and then I re-ordered a new drive with the money from the refund.

Again, I will atempt to reformat, but I don't know how. Help wwith this would be apreciated.

Thanx for the help so far,

Vince
