Hello,

i purchased a server with SBS 2003 preinstalled on it. I have all the discs for it. I'd really like to change the drive letter since whoever set it up didn't bother to partition the second portion of the remainding HDD space.

C: 80GB
d: CD-Drive
*: 150GB

soooo how do I change the drive letter as well as make the necessary changes in the registry without breaking things?

thanks
Phil

You want to change the system drive from C: to something else?

...

no I want to be able to change the free space to D: and change the CD-Rom to E: problem with that is everytime I go to install something new it defaults to d: for my CD-Rom Drive. It's an annoyance to me and should be fixed?

Thanks
Phil

If you are talking about changing the *: 150GB to D drive, that's simple.

-Right Click on My Computer
-Select Manage
-Click on Disk Management
-Right Click on the CD-DRIVE and Select Change Letter and Drive Path.
-Change it to E:
-Accept the Changes.
-Right Click on the Unused 150GB and Format it to D DRIVE.

D : is my CD-Drive atm... so if I were to change that letter everytime the computer yells for a Windows Disc it's gonna default to D :

What is the registry entry to change the default path of the Windows Disc?

Thanks

You should be able to just go to Disk Management and format the unused space. I'd just leave the CDROM at D : and make the new "drive" E : . But if you want to change the CDROM and new partition drive letters, it should be no problem at this point.

Once you've created a new data drive and set the drive letter, you can move some of the SBS data stores to it. Microsoft has white papers on how to do it properly. Don't "wing it". There are Registry and Permission issues involved in some of the location changes. Find the paper and follow the directions exactly.
