what progams have you installed lately? removing programs usually cannot solve problems that it made during installation.... reformat and reinstall if possible...:wine:

There are far to many possibilities as reasons why WinXP won't shut down.
(USB devices hanging, Audio drivers, Video drivers, Pagefile corruption, etc...)

Most do not require a REFORMAT or REINSTALLATION.

You may want to give a little more info on your system for additional help.
Also, have you checked the EVENT LOG for clues as to what is causing the problem?

I'll go with llithtech on this one.

Disconnect all unneccessary peripherals before you boot up. ALL inc excess cdroms/dvd/usb/nic/ etc.
Then, shut down.
See if it shuts down ok.
If yes, then add one at a time while the system is off, then boot.
Shut down - see which one stops the shut down - one at a time though - don't be hasty

I thought I would bring this back to the top. I'm having the same issue on my laptop with nothing plugged in to it. I also downloaded microsofts UHP (?) program to determine what it was that was hanging my shutdown. The error code in the event log was 1517.(something not releasing memory at shutdown)

The log for the UHP program says the error is due to something trying to access my wireless card during shutdown, which I have disabled in most cases as my office doesn't have access to the campus wireless.

Any ideas how to track down what program is doing this? It's not overly annoying, it just takes a good full minute to shutdown, where it boots and is usable in about 20s from a cold boot.(not a resume)

Thanks!

What is the SOURCE of the Event Error (found in the Event LOG - i.e. USERNV, VSS, etc..)

That's why you really need to turn 'System Recovery' on...you wouldn't have such problems

I think I may have found it. It looks like the campus installation of McAfee that i have here tries to contact a server when the computer is shutting down. I'm not really sure why or why it's tyring to use the wireless network card. But, I'm going to play around with the settings when I get some time and I'll get back to you.

edit:

Well I found my problem. McAfee was trying to scan the floppy drive at shutdown. My laptop does not have a floppy drive. So it was getting unhappy. I've deselected that option and have been able to shutdown/reboot several times without the long delays. Still don't understand all the errors, but that seems to have fixed it.
