This is a nice deal for those who are actually in the business of working as a consultant or systems integrator, but I have a feeling the deal will be spoiled by thousands of people who make up customer success stories.

I went to a local MS seminar and got a code for 2003 Server.....only problem is that in order to get a copy you need to be a "Registered MS Partner". You can register for free....but you'll need a tax ID to do this. I don't have one so I wasted my time at the seminar.

If you have access to one or you have one that's not a bad deal.

Since when do they ask for a tax ID? I didn't have to enter mine. (Oddly enough, I am one of the few people here that *have* a tax ID!)

use your SSN as your tax id and then if you get enough business from it then go to the federal level......

ahemm "...Microsoft reserves the right to audit partner success story for validation prior to fulfilling resalable copy of Small Business Server 2003 to Partner. Partner is responsible for adhering to the tax reporting laws that are applicable to Partner Company?s business.

I actually didn't have to do any of this. Yesterday everyone from my company that had put in for the XP Pro deal where you got the lava lamp received a full copy of Small Business Server Premiere. They even called one of the guys up to ask them if they were interested. He said no but they sent it anyway.

EDIT: The version I received was a Not For Resale

Hey all you smart people with network knowledge and savoir-faire, can you help me with a server OS question?

I threw together a barebones PC with spare parts I had lying around. I would like to use it as a server on my home network (2 PC's and one Mac). Also I would like to use it as a small internet host, or web server (I have DSL).

Can I really use a home server, through my router's firewall as an internet web server?

What OS should I use? I have have an obscene number of not-for-resale OS options and I have no idea which to use:

XP Professional
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
SQL ServerTM 2000 Developer Edition
Exchange Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
Mobile Information Server 2002
Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server
SharePointTM Portal Server 2001
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
Windows Server 2003 Web Edition
Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services

The MS marketing literature is full of things like "providing solutions" and "streamilining infrastructure" and blah blah blah. I can't figure out what to use to do what I want to do...

If you dont know much about setting up a network, go with XP and a WWW daemon and use a common workgroup name for sharing resources now and then between your PC's .... and screw your mac .... j/k. Ive never had much experience with cross platform networking, I just tell people to get someone else to work on their macs. The best way would be to do as 2k/2k3 Domain controller and have everything setup right but that is overkill for most people. If you go with XP and wanna keep your router then just check your documentation so that incoming packets on port 80 are routed to the computer running the server .... or put your server in the DMZ.

XxDaTxX, cool, thanks for your advice. I was thinking of maybe having the webserver in the DMZ with a software firewall. Our PCs share files just fine on the internal network, either wired or wireless. I have never looked to see whether they show up externally...Hmmmm... Anyway thanks for the advice.

Got the "not for resale" package in the mail today....
not a bad pay-off for 3 hours of my time at the seminar a while back

Looks like it's the full meal deal -- including outlook, sql server, frontpage, IIS (ISA)

I don't believe there is any difference (software wise) between the NFR and For Resale versions...besides the obvious.

I got this out of the blue yesterday. Is there any advantage to using this on a computer currently running XP Pro? I know I will have to do a clean install, as this will only upgrade previous server versions, but I am curious if this is better than XP Pro. I won't really be using it as a server. A few months ago my brother told me it was very stable, but I don't want to lose the flexibility and driver support of XP Pro. If not, I'll probably just install Outlook 2003 and Frontpage 2003, which I think will install independently.

there's also a thread regarding this over at chubbywallet... apparently people have been receiving the free copy of windows 2003 small business premium edition w/ the not for resale sticker on it. one guy mentioned that some guy was selling them on ebay, and got prosecuted and had to pay a $30,000 fine. so i think even though this is probably the exact same pacakge as the for resale version plus the "promotion not for resale" stickers, those of you who don't really need this software probably should hold on to it anyway instead of dumping it on ebay. it's not unlikely that microsoft will be able to track all the packages they sent out to different people.

i must confess that i too received this package, and since i have no use for it, i looked into the possibility of selling it. but after reading other posts and doing a little research, i think i'll hold on to my package. it's not worth the hassle...

those who are Microsoft partners (subscription) also received a box of this in the mail. (there was a thread about becoming one a lonngggg time ago, for like $300 and you got a a package of all of MS' software with it).

I really think Microsoft has raised the bar with Windows Server 2003 and XP. Their best OS's yet.

I tried to put in for the XP deal a while back, didnt get it. Signed up for the seminar to get a free copy, but I couldn't go due to work. They called and offered me the free training course & resale copy of 2003, which I took but didn't actually DO yet, and I got a copy of 2003 Premiere NFR in the mail yesterday. *shrug* Cool. =)

I wouldnt use it on a machine that you arent gonna use as a server. If XP fits the bill, theres no reason to use a server version. Stability has alot more to do with the programs that you install, and not the OS, neither XP or the server versions have inherent memory leaks, its the programs that you install that cause instability with time. XP has several features geared towards the home PC market, take advantage of them.

BTW, If anyone cant sell their package, and arent really gonna use em, then a poor college student/CS major (yours truly) wouldnt mind a donation to assist his efforts to keep up to date on the 2003 Server.

I got a not for resale version yesterday. I am not too sure I will use the server because XP fills all my needs (for my PC at least, maybe if I get another computer because free is better than dropping another $100 on XP) but I will most certainly use Outlook 2003 (which I really want since I have a very very bad spam problem) since I can't afford Office 2003. Anyway, it seems that MS really thinks that Server 2003 and some Office products are so much better than their previous versions that they want to get the word out hence they are atually giving free trials left and right.

Oh and for

You can probably get XP for like $30 at your school if you go to a state funded school.
