Hey all you smart people with network knowledge and savoir-faire, can you help me with a server OS question?
I threw together a barebones PC with spare parts I had lying around. I would like to use it as a server on my home network (2 PC's and one Mac). Also I would like to use it as a small internet host, or web server (I have DSL).
Can I really use a home server, through my router's firewall as an internet web server?
What OS should I use? I have have an obscene number of not-for-resale OS options and I have no idea which to use:
XP Professional
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
SQL ServerTM 2000 Developer Edition
Exchange Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
Mobile Information Server 2002
Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server
SharePointTM Portal Server 2001
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
Windows Server 2003 Web Edition
Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services
The MS marketing literature is full of things like "providing solutions" and "streamilining infrastructure" and blah blah blah. I can't figure out what to use to do what I want to do...

I don't know if anyone here has gotten this far with the Sweet Success program yet, but you know what the last hoop is? Fill out an affidavit and have it notarized. I'm not making this up.

That's only a problem for people who lied. I'm sure no one here will have that problem

If anyone got a copy they don't want, I'm interested in it. Obviously I can't buy it from you, but I'll give you a few bucks to cover shipping costs. Shoot me an email or PM.
Yeah they are definitely getting the word out... whether you want to listen or not... I recently got a copy of Office 2003 for $20 through an HUP Program... But that deal was definitely NOT HOT after I started looking into what MS is putting into all their software now... :disgust:Originally posted by: Staples
I got a not for resale version yesterday. I am not too sure I will use the server because XP fills all my needs (for my PC at least, maybe if I get another computer because free is better than dropping another $100 on XP) but I will most certainly use Outlook 2003 (which I really want since I have a very very bad spam problem) since I can't afford Office 2003. Anyway, it seems that MS really thinks that Server 2003 and some Office products are so much better than their previous versions that they want to get the word out hence they are atually giving free trials left and right.
