I got an email about a week ago that I had successfully completed all requirements. The last step is for them to veryify the SBS implementation with an independent co. I actually did do an implementation, so it will be verified. Can't wait to recieve my copy. It will just about pay for most of the christmas presents after I do the eBay thing.

MS is giving away a "For Resale" SBS2003:
http://sbs2003.msuspartners.com/?psite=1
The requirement is for a submitted report of a successful installation.
So, maybe you could?: install for free at some location, the NFR copy; then get a free "For resale" copy from MS.

No clue.. Is it like Windows? I don't work in the computer field, so I have no idea.

Sal

Then you really have no buisness installing it if you want to know if it is like Windows. NOt before reading up on what it is.

Wow...that was really helpful and intelligent. Guy honestly asks for help and you helpfully inform him to get help. Mmmmhmmm...

Salvador, I'm reading up on it myself. Trying to decide if there is any benefit to using it over XP Pro for my purposes. I have to admit it IS very difficult to wade through the MS marketing BS "providing secure solutions" "enhancing productivity" blah blah blah. You know, a catheter would do the exact same thing, provide me enhanced bladder security while allowing me to work nonstop so I don't have to get up to urinate.

What use is this software to you and Microsoft, why did they send it to you?

MS hopes you will install it and use it to see how just how simple setting up an office network is. In doing so you may learn that certain IT support people are unnecessary at your business. You may save money for your company, you may decide to start up a new small e-business, you may advocate the purchase of SBS 2003 to your friends and acquaintances. You learn something, MS earns something.

What is Small Business Server 2003?

It is an operating system AND a package of other software to set up and use a network and intranet/internet server.

The OS is Windows Server 2003. It is quite similar (especially in look and feel) to XP Professional. You can install it on a PC and it will run the PC. You can install other applications like Office XP and checkers and run them. It may not have the driver support for all non-server functions like, for instance, gaming. You wouldn't want to use this as the OS for your gaming rig as your graphics/sound/etc. cards might not be fully supported or work smoothly.

This package includes Outlook, both as a client (you can read your email, keep a calendar, collect hot babes' phone numbers and addresses, etc.) AND as an Exchange Server (which means you can set up email accounts and addresses WITHIN your network and possibly access them over the internet)

This package has a software firewall and other internet security stuff (sorry, still learning about all that...)

This package contains FrontPage 2003 for creating and maintaining intranet/internet web pages, which by itself is a valuable application even if it isn't the best web design software on the planet.

This package also has SQL Server which is a relational database that I don't use and know nothing about.

I can't find anything about a catheter.

From MS, Small Business Server Premium edition contains:

Windows Server 2003 (the Operating System)
? Security-enhanced, reliable operating system that keeps data available on an internal network
? Includes the power of Microsoft Active Directory® directory service and its tools

Windows SharePoint Services
Team communications and collaboration environment

Exchange Server 2003 technology
? Communication, messaging and collaboration infrastructure that helps increase productivity
? Microsoft Outlook® Web Access, to access e-mail through the Web

Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
A unified place to manage e-mail, calendars, contacts, and other personal and team information

Microsoft Shared Fax Service
? Fax with fewer telephone lines, from users' desktops, at user-set hours
? Receive faxes through SharePoint, e-mail, or printer

Routing and Remote Access Services (RRAS)
Firewall technology to help secure Internet connections
The premium edition includes the RRAS firewall technology found in the standard edition, plus ISA Server 2000, SQL Server 2000, and Microsoft FrontPage.

ISA Server 2000 technology
Firewall technology to help secure Internet connections

SQL Server 2000
Relational database supporting line-of-business applications

Microsoft Office FrontPage® 2003
Tools for sophisticated Web site development or the creation of customized solutions for Windows SharePoint Services

Man, I got in on that $39.99-$49.99 (I forget), XP deal with the bobble head, baseball and gum. I really hope I get this cause I really could use it. My server is running the demo version and would be so nice to actually own this great software on my server !!!

If anyone does not want there's drop me a line but, I really could use and hope this comes in for me.

Yes, I run a small business but, can't afford the software right now..

My fingers are crossed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this is like previous "premium" editions, it prolly isn't patchable.

You need to read this full thread before you post, then go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/howtobuy/pricing.mspx and read up on SBS.

Added, SBE has exchange (mail+other stuff server), sql server and a couple other things embedded, this wouldn't work well for running as a workstation, as the install process automatically installs exchange, sql, etc.

Not so. Anyone that's receiving this can actually just use it to get Windows 2003 server for free. You don't have to install any of the optional components.

haha, wait a few days. They make you install it.

Everybody needs a little somethin'somethin'.

This reminds me of the old joke about Gates wedding night, when Melinda found out what Microsoft really meant. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Anyone who is not going to use their copy I will trade/pay you something. We could really use this in our household.

I searched the For Sale forum, but nothing comes up.

Thanks,
Chris

1 question. it says it includes 5 client licenses. Can you purchase more (say if I installed this at my location and we had 20 computers, would I need to buy 15 more client licenses??? If so, where?)

Got my copy the other day too. I don't really have much of a need for it though. I could find a use, but if someone else wants it, I could let it go. PM me.

I've got an NFR SBS 2K3 Premium... would rather have regular Windows Server 2003 Standard (anyone have an unactivated copy back from previous TS2 seminars?). LMK.

For those of you that have opened their SBS software, does it say NFS on the inside of the box on the cd/dvd jewel cases or just the sticker on the outside of the box?

I got a call from Airborne Express about a package from MS with my old address. Just got around to checking on it today and it's already been shipped back to MS. Seems odd that MS would put my updated telephone number on the package but not the address itself. Anyone know how to get in touch with them so I can it redelivered?

Outside of each DVD case says "Promotionsal Sample Not for Resale" but the CDs\DVD don't have any markings other than the hologram and the "don't make illegal copies" thing.
