Windows stuck at title screen for 5 minutes!

For some reason, windowsXP pro is taking forever to boot up. Once it boots, I experience no noticeable delays or slowdowns. I have recently installed a new second HD (new WD 160GB) which may or may not be contributing to this problem. Perhaps more salient is the fact that, while this is happening, the keyboard doesn't seem to respond (i try to turn the numlock on/off but it doesn't respond; unless I'm mistaken, you're supposed to be able to do so at this screen if the system is running normally). Any ideas?

Download a hardware monitor to check your rails. 12v especially.

This sounds like a plug and play issue with some device that is not responding. Any new USB devices too? When you installed the HD, did you set the jumpers to something other than CS?

Definitely sounds like a P&P issue. Possibly something conflicting at bootup. Did you move anything around like a network or sound card?

I don't know if this is of any help but i had a problem similar to this a while back, it was the same problem with the Windows bar freezeing for a certain amount of time at start up, sometimes it would be 5 minutes others time it would be 3minutes. I ran Maxtors Powermax software and on the full scan it came up with a error that my hdd was failing and that i should backup my data as soon as possible, the computer used to work fine once you got into windows, i have had no problems since i received my replacement drive.

also try downloading and installing bootvis, it can significantly reduce your windows xp boot up time~

I'm ruling out PSU at th moment since it ran fine before the weekend and the computer had not been used during the week. However, the primary HD that has windows was taken out and used on another comp for troubleshooting purposes. Could that have something to do with it?

Is there any util that tracks loading times during boot that would let me figure out if something was timing out or whatnot?

Boot using BOOTLOG.TXT and then see where the problems are. Sounds like some device is not responding properly to a boot query. How about SAFE MODE? Go into MSCONFIG and Start Up and uncheck everything except the bare essentials relating to Windows itself.

start in safe mode and see where it takes the longest to load one of the DLLs and SYSs.
