I lost a url that I need..lol

The site is, I THINK, technet. It is a search tool to see what updates are needed for different versions of windows.

I am going to compile a batch file for work to load the windows updates easier. The switches/parameters would also be helpful for the different styles of updates.

I am not running a 03 server or I would use SUS.

Thanks in advance,

Bump for a thread with a topic I was about to start one on myself

Here's a copy of a "supposed" working batch file, but I can't get it working myself.

@echo off
setlocal
set PATHTOFIXES="j:\common\Microsoft Software\winxp\XP-Patches-Fixes"

%PATHTOFIXES%\WindowsXP-KB823182-x86-ENU.exe /quiet /norestart
%PATHTOFIXES%\WindowsXP-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe /quiet /norestart
%PATHTOFIXES%\WindowsXP-KB824141-x86-ENU.exe /quiet /forcerestart

exit

I did change the number of the patch (KBxxxxxx) to the patches I want to update. However, with or without the /passive switch, it still brings up the window asking for user-interaction. I have tried various methods to get this working and would like some help as well.

With our combined asking, maybe someone will have pity on us and give us an answer on how to batch file a long list of hotfixes/patches/updates.

I have tried that and the switches don't seem to work correctly.

Some hotfixes call for the /q and /z to be "quiet" and "norestart" and the later patches spell the switches out "quiet" "passive" & "norestart"

Yet, when I que them via a manual Run --> CMD or through the batch file.....they still popup the window asking for me to click next.

You are getting the switches wrong then. Make sure you have a space between each one, post the complete command line here.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer might be the lost tool you're wanting. Search Microsoft.com for MBSA or see the link in my signature. If you are batch-patching Win2000 systems or pre-SP1 WinXP systems then add qchain.exe as the last thing that your batchfile runs (search MS for qchain.exe too). MBSA 1.2.1 will check for missing Office2000 patches (if you run it locally on the machine, that is) whereas MBSA 2.0 will not, so you may want to try them both depending on your stuff.

There are some patches that I've never been able to get them to truly run in non-interactive mode. I simply put them at the beginning of the batchfile so I can attend to them first and get it over with. Also, if one of your updates is js56nen.exe (for Microsoft Javascript), put it first of all or it will not take effect at the restart.

Here's how I determine which switches are needed:

I open a command prompt (Run --> cmd) and then browse to the path where the patch is located. I execute the patch with the /? switch and see whether it is using the /q /z or the /quiet /norestart type of switches and document each one individually so I can attempt to write each one correctly in the batch file.

I just followed my same procedure for this hotfix:

WindowsXP-KB823182-x86-ENU.exe

It says:

UPDATE [-u] [-f] [-n] [-o] [-z] [-q] [-l]

-u Unattended mode
-f Force other programs to close when the computer shuts down
-n Do not back up files for uninstall
-o Overwrite OEM file without prompting
-z Do not restart when installation is complete
-q Quiet mode (no user interaction)
-l List installed Windows hotfixes

Normally, for this type of hotfix, I would write the line:

%PATHTOFIXES%\WindowsXP-KB823182-x86-ENU.exe /u /z /q

If I understand how this should work, like all other programs I have dealt with, then it should just run with no interaction on my part, with no popup windows and should not restart the computer. At the end of the batch file, i will allow the last hotfix/patch to do the restart.
