Windows Updates - Killed your PC's performance?

Just after updating my PC with the latest patches it has been performing really poorly. This is slow, sometimes takes 45 seconds for the Start menu to display. CPU load is minimal.

Has anybody else seen this as well?

This is an AMD X2 3800 system with 2GB of RAM, so its not like it should be slow or anything.

I just booted into my WinXP SP2 installation (fully patched) on my X2 3800+ with 2GB of RAM and it was flying. The 15000rpm SCSI drive doesn't hurt matters, of course :evil:

One of the monthly updates was the Malicious Software Removal Tool, as usual. I believe it runs at bootup. Have you been running antivirus protection, system's clean and all that?

If you suspect the patches were the issue somehow, try uninstalling them using the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel as a fact-finding step. To see which patches were installed, visit Microsoft Update and check the patch history.

my machine is fully up to date with windows update, no problems at all. you might have something else going on in the background tho.

I run a PC shop, and have seen this frequently of late. Systems, both in for repair as well as fresh loads/fresh hw, run great until the last windows updates, then performance drops dramatically. Particularly affects load times.

I am not one to run Virus Scanners. Just to be sure I installed one, updated it and ran a full scan. Found nothing.

Another thing I installed was the latest stable Folding client. I have disabled it, now lets see what happens...

YES !!!!!!!!!! i have 3 PC.. the Petium ones has been performing very poorly like u described !! Bt my AMD Opteron seems OK.

I think I will disable any further Microsoft Windows Update !!!! Plus, you'll never know what they're trying to update !! People just assume they "HAVE TO" do it.
