Windows Updates

I work on a college campus that has been having a lot of problems with students with non-updated copies of Windows and with all of these new worms coping out all the time, I need a way to remotely scan Windows machines to see if they are up-to-date. The student network is not setup as a domain. Does anyone have any ideas?

You might be able to do it with LANguard. It detects systems in a given range of IP addresses, then checks them for vulnerabilities.

retina scanner and micrsoft have released scanners for the various serious patches (the ones that the worms are hitting)

I don't have a link but they are on MS webpage.

This company worked with Microsoft to create their Baseline Security Scanner.

Very good indept tool and can push out the patches too.

You can also do a Microsoft SUS server if you get ambitious.

The problem is that you will need admin rights over the Pc's to deploy them I believe. Maybe even to scan them.
I use Languard @ work and it works pretty well.

If you're running or working on a university network, you should check out the resnet-l mailing list at Notre Dame.. Google for resnet-l should bring it up. Lots of college net admin type folk subscribe to it, you can probably get some good help there.

Thanks to eveyone who has replied. I am currently looking at the solutions posted and trying to dertermine the best one to use.
