If you were a Beta tester, probly; but this is a public beta, so no one using these will get free anything.Originally posted by: angrynerdrock
when the beta period is over, will microsoft offer vista free, or at a discounted price for the beta testers? I know when my brother beta tested for XP and ME he got the final versions free from ms

A separate machine is always ideal. In my case, I am using an old 80GB hard drive on a spare IDE port with my primary OS drive unplugged for safety. This gives a quick way to switch back to XP, with the only work being swapping a few cables (compared to sliding the office chair from one computer to another, it's only slightly worse).Originally posted by: hardcandy2
I would not depend on it as a working OS, a separate machine is best. Not sure what installing it as a dual boot will do to the bootloader or MBR.

Well the download got slower and slower until it stopped toally at 3.1 GB, just 90 or so megs short. I started another download after I could not get the first one to resume, (played with it for almost an hour before I gave up). The current download is running much faster and is still going strong at 37%. I wonder what happened to the first one? Oh well, got my fingers crossed.
I have a spare 40GB hard drive I'm going to throw in as a secondary drive and install onto that. I figure if this thing goes south I'll just repair XP with a fixmbr. I've also backed up all my data in case it really goes south and I have to reinstall XP.
I'll let you all know how I make out later this evening.
I also found Vista beta drivers for my 9800 Pro and Audigy 2 but nothing yet for my nForce 2 mainboard. I'll keep looking.

Can you do that with Vista? I remember before, you couldn't dual boot different versions of Windows unless both versions were installed onto the same drive, but different partitions. I would much rather install Vista on a seperate hard drive and have it dual boot along side with XP Pro.

You know ......... I just assumed you could because Vista doesn't use boot.ini like XP does. It uses something called bcedit.exe and I believe you can set it up to boot from different drives. I may be wrong. If I can't then I'll just partition my main drive and dual boot that way. I'll let you know after I finish downloading it and burning it to disc.

Windows doesn't care what drive it's on. Even XP.
