LINKI have a q6600 machine which I am trying to use with Vista Ultimate to be a HTPC. A few weeks ago, I started havinng strange problems where many applications would not run properly. They typically fail with the following code:
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).
Also, it seems that sometimes when I download a file (e.g., the zipped VGA driver for my motherboard) on this machine, it will have a different size than if I download the same file on a different XP machine. The file downloaded on the XP machine can be unzipped and the file on the Vista machine exhibits errors after unzipping.
I have removed all extraneous hardware from the system and have installed a clean Vista install on the following:
ECS 671T-M
Intel q6600
2x1GB 533 MHz RAM
WD1600JD Hard Drive
Airlink101 300N Wireless USB adaptor
DI-614+ router
Any help or thoughts on what could be causing the problems would be greatly appreciated. To be honest, I am about ready to throw away the machine and buy somthing new.

EDIT 1:
Vista SP1 downloaded on the Vista machine fails with above code.
Vista SP1 downloaded on the XP machine and installed on the Vista Machine appears to run correctly.

Problem seems to be perhaps related to Internet Explorer. I downloaded Firefox and have been able to successfully download files and have them execute correctly.
I really don't like to have IE broken like this, so if anybody has any further thoughts on what might be failing in the chain, I would greatly appreciate it.

I downloaded Power archiver and renamed a Mozilla installation .exe file to a .gz file. After making this change, I was able to view all of the contents of the archive and launch the Mozilla Setup.exe. It seems that the problem is some how related to Vista IE(Mozilla?) negotiating with the server what type of file it is going to receive. I was also unable to download Power Archiver on the Vista machine (even with Mozilla). I am guessing that this might be a router/wireless USB problem. What a PITA. If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know.

Redownloading the corrupt PowerArchiver.exe file through Mozilla and then renaming the .exe to .gz again reveals the contents of the file; however, it seems that I still can't actuatlly launch the setup.exe without receiving additional errors about not being able to write a file. Very strange. The networking components here are:
DI-614+ router
Airlink101 300N Wireless USB

Well, I strung together 50 ft of Ethernet cables to make a hard connection to the HTPC. It appears that when going across the hard connection, files are coming in correctly. I still seem to be having some problems with certain flash content coming across even the wired connection in IE7. Not sure if this is maybe related to something corrupt which might have been downloaded across the bad wireless connections.
