This is a good sign & the final release will probably be here shortly...I've never been a fan of beta released software...I don't like feeling like a guinea pig...

I normally refrain from installing pre-final service packs but curiosity got the best of me this time and I have to say, I've had no issues installing and uninstalling the service pack and its refresh. There is definatley a nice improvement all around, that's for sure. Eagerly awating final and pretty pleased that uninstalling the refresh and installing final won't be difficult.

Supposedly, the only thing *missing* in SP1 RC1/Refresh is the WGA (Policy) Update.

I don't know why some of my icons got turned off during the uninstall/install process, but it hasn't really caused any problem other than some minor inconvenience. Dittos for the settings getting changed in one of my (non-Microsoft) Gadgets.

I stepped through all my other settings last night (took several hours) and everything else appeared to be unchanged. Weird!

While SP1 has been working GREAT all along...

I *think* 'Refresh' is taking longer to boot than 'pre-Refresh'. Everything else is (still) flying though, including shutdown...

I updated from the earlier RC a few days ago, no issues. Well, my video card is artifacting pretty often on the desktop (Aero), but that's because it's over 5 years old and probably on its last legs

i would even go as far as saying vista is every bit as quick as xp now. in fact much faster if you consider my install here is one year old!! this system has been through hell, a million bsod's and all because its been installed from day one vista rtm. but it runs excellent, this operating system repairs itself and keeps itself tidy, no doubt about it. absolutely nothing like xp, i was formatting that os every 6 months.....

True that...

This is one of the major benefits of running Vista, but seldom mentioned!

It used to be, with Win9x machines (Windows 95 - XP), the pat support answer was to "format and re-install" - and this process was usually a 'less then pleasant' customer experience, to say the least...

Microsoft has gone to a LOT of trouble making Vista self-tuning and self-repairing!

I'm blown away at how much better the Notification Area is now!

LoL!

Here comes another copy n' paste...

The Notification Area (right-side of Task Bar) has been cleaned-up in 'Refresh'.

It's gorgeous now!

SNAPPY OF NOTIFICATION AREA

This has ALWAYS bugged the hell out of me with Vista!!!

That, alone, was worth spending a couple of hours installing 'Refresh'...

BTW, you have to use the WU service to install 'Refresh'. While it takes less time to download and install (75 MB vs 465 MB), it's still like watching paint dry - plus, user interaction is required!

What is that widget bar with the Firefox logo on the far right side?

I'm sure your problems are ram timings or faulty hardware like I posted in your other thread, keep us updated .

Vista I find is very hard to crash unless you overclock too much or have faulty hardware.

Heh! Took me a second...

That's the STARDOCK OBJECTDOCK program launcher.

I run the *FREE* version - basically offers functionality similar to Mac OS X, but in Vista...

Thanks, it looks cool.

I'll have to check it out.

How well does this work with Vista?

Does it bog Vista down any?

Long story made short...

Way back when, like 1999, Microsoft hired Stardock to 'skin' Windows 2000 - they did, and this became Windows XP...

The thing is, Stardock got pissed off in the middle of the project and literally (physically) walked out the front door at Redmond with the code for Win 9x (Windows 95 - XP).

So, you don't have to worry about anything from Stardock working 100% with Windows - even Vista!

Stardock Objectdock works great, and sure as hell beats buying a Mac...

Uh stuff from Stardock works with Windows because Stardock is a gold certified MS partner.

LoL!

However you wish to put it...

I've been running Windowblinds for, like, 6 years - and never had a single problem!

Objectdock is nothing, by comparison. That's why it's *FREE*.

So, don't worry about it affecting Vista adversely...

As it turns out in my case, the above artifacting that I wrote about (it'd started to get pretty bad) was caused by the SP1 refresh after all. I realized that I'd only started to see the artifacts after installing the refresh; the earlier SP1 RC had no such problems. For now I just uninstalled the refresh completely - no more video artifacts, and I'd have had to uninstall it anyway when the final SP1 was released...

(Pic of the corruption [if pics.bbzzdd isn't still down...])

Would have been a convenient excuse to upgrade from my 9700 Pro though

The Stardock is a cool little free program and I like it.

Is there any benefits of paying for the $19.99 version?
