I am interested in hearing feedback on the latest release of Windows Whistler. I installed it with no problem on my 1ghz Athlon and it runs like a champ. Anyone have any feedback on it? new features? Lets get a good thread going here.

I did too, but after using it for about 30mins, the animations seem a bit slow on my system (Athlon 735) when opening up the start menu, etc. Other than that, it is perfect.

are there any new features that you saw that you liked that I possibly missed? I would never use this for my main OS, but it was really neat to see what MS has in store for the future.

I was running Beta 1...I took it off just now and restored my Win2k install with CD-RESQ. I got tired of the slow menu animations and start menu

All due respect NFS4, you gave up on Whistler because of "slow menu animations?"

I seriouly hope you are not an official BETA tester!

Having written some programs (basic), it really bugs me when people want to try BETA software, only to give up on it on such elementary excuses.

As with any BETA operating system, you should never rely on it as your "main OS."

Of course, that's just my opinion; I could be wrong (hehe)

I don't know about you, but time is precious to me. And I HATE having to wait around for anything. The menu's were slow popping up, and would cause my mouse to stutter (USB and PS2). On top of that, it nearly coughed up its lung when I tried to copy a some files on a CD in Windows Explorer while surfing the net. It froze my machine.

And thankfully, I am NOT a beta tester. B/C I couldn't deal with that for too long. When you're used to a certain "level," you don't want to be brought down by something (no matter what it is). I know that it is a work in progress, and I hope they work on the menu animations. But the concept is great and the overall GUI is great. They just need to get the speed down packed.

I just wanted to see how Whistler was and if it was cool enough for me to use until the next release (Beta 2) comes out. I may be a picky bastard, but hey aren't we all

Sure, Whistler is nice and about 90% stable, but I just wanted to test it out. And the animations and slow repsonses bugged me. If you have a problem with that, fine. I don't care, it's not your computer

<< Does SPDIF work in whistler? >>

Good question, I was trying to get my SB Live Value to work, and nothing came out even if it seemed installed perfectly. My speakers are plugged to the spdif, so that may be the problem.

Ok, I have whistler and I'm loving it. IE 5.6 is great (so much faster than 5.5! and pretty too ) and so far its compatible with almost everything I've got (all my hardware runs fine). I left it on overnight and it restarted like 6 times (I was sleeping so I didn't) know. I thought that was wierd, some kinda bug. Does multitasking pretty well on my Athlon 700/128mb PC133/Geforce DDR, I have the same complaint as NFS4 though. Menu loads really slow. I can deal though. I miss the quick launch bar too. Other than that I love the new OS. Its seems very stable, especially for an early beta (not like winME was) and could very well replace win2k when its final. I like the new layouts for the control panel, start menu, and my computer, they definately look sweet. The new menus are nice and the square that highlights stuff you select is very convient.

I heard a rumor from this guy that said Microsoft could see if a person was using Whistler
kinda like the Quake 3 key so you can play online?
is there any truth to this? cause I think this guy was smoking something really good

My official copy that I have has a Key code when upon installation dends and receives data directly from Microsoft. I also know that Microsoft developers frequent this forum and also the warez newsgroups to trace where illegal pirated software is coming from.

You would think that Microsoft would take advantage of the free advertising of their alpha/beta operating systems, to get feedback on bugs etc. I never heard that it "called home". Wonder if this feature will be built into the final release along with IE 5.6 recording your every url , don't think people will be too happy with that.
