Are XP Home and Professional the same now? I have Professional, and a friend has Home version, but neither version says "Professional" or "Home" during bootup? I'm wondering, cuz if they're getting the same updates, then why spend more for Professional?

For some reason when you install Service pack 2 the "professional" disapears for xp pro

Without sp1 you may have trouble formating more than a 137gb drive. Still a good deal.

If I buy xp pro disc with SP2, when/if I install it on a 200gig hdd will it recognize the whole 200gigs ? (187gb I think) or
will I still only be able to format 137 gigs ?

XP service pack 1 broke the 137gb limit. You can actually load it up if you format with a third party program like max blast. It will warn you that some problems may arise larger than 137 partitions, but it works. Basically just the early disks had that problem. You will be fine as long as you get a disk that include sp 1.

Sorry the description is confusing, because it says service pack 1 can be downloaded from Microsoft. Yet, it also states it has service pack 2. I doubt there?re may XP disks without sp1 out there.

Is there something different about the OEM version? I heard you could only reinstall (on the same computer) X number of times before it's no good forever.

OEM has no Microsoft support. You can install it as may times as you want. However, it will only activate once. You will have to call Microsoft to reactivate XP if you need to reinstall or do any major hardware (i.e. motherboard) change.

I never knew that. All 3 of my WinXP installs are OEM and I've never had to call for activation when reinstalling.

Microsoft just announced they will disable internet activation for some oem's. I don't remember which ones, but you will only need to call if you change some hardware. It comes "Pre-activated" and with those lame restore disks (also preactivated) that comes with it instead of a regular XP cd.

Yeah, I've reformatted my main machine a couple times now, with no problems getting it to activate.
Even if you do have problems doing the automatic activation online, you can do it over the phone. Had to do it the other day, when (due to my own stupidity) I re-installed XP on a new file server computer I built, for the 3rd time in a week (don't ask!!). Tried doing the ol' voice activated phone activation, and couldn't get that to play nice with me.

Next thing ya know, I'm talking to someone with a fairly thick east indian accent. 3 minutes later I had the new activation code punched in, and windows activated on my computer. I just had to reassure them that I hadn't installed the OS on more than one computer, and I told her that no, I hadn't, I'd just had some conflicts with windows, and had had to reformat and reinstall a few times. NO problem, just 5 minutes out of my life, and an 800 number too.
