Windows XP and ZIP drive!

Hello everyone two questions:

1) A friend of mine has a zip drive installed on a computer running XP (he has to!!! the server is Slackware!), but for some strange reason sometimes when he tries to copy a large number of files to the drive, this will completly crash
the computer... not always, just sometimes! I already tried many different things including replacing the drive for
a new unit! I contacted Iomega's support and no new suggestions... my last attempt is going to be reinstalling the
OS.

Hence the second question:

2) What files contain that stupid activation information, both for windows XP and office XP! I'm getting tired of having
to call always I need to reinstall, because the computer doesn't have internet access!

I know you probably have, but I have to ask anyways. Have you tried the latest version of Iomegaware? Supposedly the drivers that come with XP are supposed to work just fine, but when I was troubleshooting my zip for another issue they recommended that I try that first.

Yes, I did! That was one of the suggestions of Iomega's support!

Unfortunately, it's illegal to bypass the activation. Yes, I know it's a PITA, but if you don't want to have to deal with it, you're just going to have to use Windows 2000 (that is, if you care about being legal).

Do you have a sound blaster live! sound card? If I remember correctly there was some issue with large files going on the bus with certain Live! drivers......

I was going to mention what codewiz said. Also, is it an IDE, parallel port, USB?

I know it's illegal, but in my book is less illegal then to use a illegal copy of windows 2000, when my friend owns legal
copies of both Windows XP and Office XP, not to mention of every program on that computer's harddisk!!!

No, no Soudblaster Live! The zip is an IDE-ATAPI connected to a 845PE motherboard, sound card is built-in and it's
disabled no need for sound on that computer!!

I had a similar issue when I moved from 2000 to XP. My zip is external USB, but the problem you mentioned was the same. My solution was that I just dumped Iomega's horrible program and let XP see it as a removable drive. No problems since then.

Well, I tryed it both ways! With and without Iomega's software the problem is there in both cases!!
