Hey guys. I have a quick question about the WinXP Instillation.

I have a Windows XP CD from my wifes DELL computer. It is called a "OPERATING SYSTEM -- Reinstillation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 1"

Before I get ready to order all of my PC parts from newegg, I need to know one thing. Will that CD work if I try to use it to install an operating system on my new computer, or do I have to buy a brand new 90$ OEM version of it from newegg? I wouldnt mind buying it, but would this work? Excuse my ignorance here, because I am not entirely sure if a) it will even work, and b) if it is completely legal. Do they make them only able to work on a Dell computer or something? I deffinetly will not do this if it is illegal or anything. So if someone could maybe let me know, it would be greatly appriciated.

Also, what is the best way of obtaining a LEGAL (of course) Windows XP Home or Pro edition Full Edition? Neweggs *purchase with hardware* looks pretty good. I heard someone say that if you are associated with a business, you can get a considerable discount on Windows XP Professional, but am unaware of the details.

Thanks! Help is appricated!

no associations with business discounts buddy

And you cant use that Dell copy on a new PC legally, so you have to buy the new OEM copy to be legal

Not sure about legality but I obtained a Dell XP Home disc and it worked just fine on my new PC build so it will work.

Don't you still have to register XP within 30 days or it quits? I don't think he could register the new machine without another license.

I think you can register the same number a couple of times.

My experience has been that Dell OS disks look for Dell in the system bios and will not install unless the os disk finds DELL in the bios. Just my 2 cents.

My Dell XP disc worked fine on a computer I built, but it installs some extra Dell crap that is difficult to remove so I just bought XP Pro.

Hehe, thats what I was thinking

But yes, thats what I was afraid of, if it looks for something in the computer and wont install unless it finds that. If thats the case I will buy it.

Thanks again.

That looking for Dell Bios is crap, it worked fine for me and nothing Dell related was installed.

Well, the Compaq/HP EVO desktop winxp restore disks work on anything. It just installs a bunch of crap that needs to be removed. I would opt for winxp upgrade if you have a qualifying product. Its the cheapest way to go, legally. Pro version of course.

Wait a sec.. What exactly do you mean?

I actually have a Windows XP Home Upgrade sitting here at my desk looking through stuff. What do you mean about that?

Thanks.
