Windows XP changes color depth every time i boot up

hi guys,

here's the issue i am having. I have a dell Inspiron 5100 which uses the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 video adapter. Every time i boot into Windows, my color depth changes from the 32-bit setting i had set to 8-bit. I change it back to 32-bit, which works fine, reboot, and again, it goes back to 8-bit.

I have installed the default driver that came on the Dell drivers cd, as well as gone to the Dell website and downloaded the latest driver they offer. Yet every time i reboot windows, it goes back to the 8-bit setting. To be more exact, windows boots up in 32-bit, and once logged in the screen flickers and changes to the 8-bit setting.

I'm not sure what else to try. Hopefully one of you guys has my answer.

Do you have the resolution set too high? I.E. if the default settings for the laptop's LCD screen are 1024x768x32-bit and you have it set to try for 1600x1200x32-bit, it cant' do those settings, so it goes to 8-bit?

Here's some more details:

Windows XP Home installed... no domain...

The LCD is set to the default, native 1024x768x32 resolution. However, once logging in, the screen flickers and changes to 8-bit color depth.

At first I thought it was happening through every reboot, however, if I log off, and log back on, the flickering continues to proceed every time.

Just to follow up with the solution here, I was able to find the culprit:

MSN Messenger

Once uninstalled, the flickering upon logging in went away. Now when I boot up, it enters in at 32-bit and stays there!
