Windows XP File Sharing bug?

Hey everyone. I have Windows XP pro installed and would like to share some files so that anyone on my network can access them. I have some accounts set up for people with different access privileges and they can get in fine. I have the guest account enabled and anyone that is not a set up user can see and access the shares under the guest account. But for some reason, when someone with Windows 9x trys to access my computer, it prompts them for a password. I have no idea what that password would be... shouldn't it just let them right in. Win2k and XP users can all see and access the shares without a problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Is the win9x machine logged in?

If so, does that same username exist on the XP machine?

make sure the windows 9x boxes are logging in with a username and password. the password is the key...XP doesn't like blank passwords. make sure the windows xp box has the username and password in the user manager so they can access the shares...make sure the username is allowed to access the share...look at the permissions of the share and of the folder.

Yes, but I want it so EVERYONE on the network, no matter who they are can access certain shares. I'm networked up with 500+ people.

And I don't want to disable passwords because then anyone that knows my login name could just login and gain access to my full shares.

There has to be a way to do it... XP/2k machines no matter what their login name is password or no password can access the guest shares without incident. The same is not so with 9x machines.

Set share permissions to everyone so everyone can access it...and give them read access only. If you have guest account enabled this should allow anyone to connect to it. or else you can use authenicated users only and anyone who logs into the domain that the share resides on will be able to access it.

maybe make sure the windows 9x users are putting in a password and username when they log on...i think xp likes to see some sort of password even if it is using the guest account.

Neither of those work. The individual I know that told me he couldn't log on said he tried multiple passwords such as guest etc. It wouldn't let him in.

And the guest account is enabled.

What happened to the simple days where you could just opt to protect certain shares with a password and some not...

Well, I have blank passwords enabled and it STILL does not allow the 9x users in...
