I am trying to set up the built in Windows XP FTP server but I can't get it to work. I have a DSL modem pluged directly into my computer and then have another network card that goes to the hub my roomates are conected to. I installed the Internet Information Servers (IIS) from the XP cd and ran ipconfig to get the computers IP address. I followed the following directions from http://kb.indiana.edu/data/ahmz.html. I get stuck on step 3 because there is no share radio button and there is no permissions button. There is an error icon displayed next to the "Default FTP site" icon in the Internet Information services control window. When I right click on it and click start, an error window pops up saying Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred. Can someone help me out please? Thanks

Configuring the FTP server:
1. On the desktop, double-click My Computer, then double-click the hard drive on which you have Windows installed.
2. Open the folder inetpub. Right-click the ftproot folder and select Properties.
3. Click the Sharing tab. Select the radio button Share this folder, then click Permissions. From the list that appears, select Everyone, and then click Remove.
4. Click the Add... button. In the drop-down list, select your computer's name. In the list of user groups that appears in the center scrollbox, select Users, then click Add, followed by OK. In the Permissions window, set the access level. If a user only needs to download files from your computer, set the access to Read. To give upload permission, also check Change. Click OK.
5. Create User accounts for each of the individuals who will need to access your server. You can do so by opening the Control Panel, then double-clicking the Users and Passwords icon. For each user, you will need to provide a username and domain.
6. In the main Control Panel window, double-click Administrative Tools, then double-click the Computer Management icon. A new window will open. On the left, beside Services and Applications, click the + (plus sign), and then click the + (plus sign) beside Internet Information Services.
7. Right-click Default FTP server and select Properties. Under "Services", make sure that Allow anonymous connections is not checked. This will prevent unauthorized access to your workstation. Click OK, then close all windows.

You need to disable simple sharing.

open a folder and click Tools->Folder Options then click the 'View' tab, unckeck 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)' (should be last item)

I disabled simple sharing and I still get Error next to the "Default FTP site" icon in the Internet Information Services control window.

EDIT: Wait the permission thing shows up now....I'll let you know what happens.

do you want there to be anonymous access?
if so, undo step 7.

if not, try setting it to anonymous just to see if it works that way.

and last, what FTP client are you using to access the server?
try opening a command prompt and typing:

ftp addressOfServer

see if you can connect that way
