Baffles me why some people admit they have pirated software on a open forum.:Q

You said that MS is greedy, but you admitted you have a illegal copy of the OS. So the only one greedy, in this case, is you.

Having said that, if you do get this software, then you can upgrade to Vista for a small fee.

I also read that you can't 'downgrade' from Pro to home.

pretty much..yes...ime if you have a freshly formatted/raw harddrive xphome upgrade when it asks for previous version you could use an xppro disc but if the xppro is installed itsa "nogo" on xphome upgrade..your xppro(if oem) install is upgradable w/ xppro upgrade or full retail..ymmv on other "scenarios"...gl

p.s. checkers(rallys possibly as well) ...the fastfood operation..their drive-thru/takeout bags have $10 off $50 OD coupons on them..

There is a coupon code that works with this. The one for the MP4 player for orders of $75 or more.

Also it looks like a Vista Upgrade will work with this too.

In for 1, thanks OP.

If you buy this (or pretty much any WindowsXP version) between dates in October and February, you can get an upgrade to an equivalent Windows VISTA version for basically shipping costs. In this case, you could get Vista Home Basic Upgrade for $9.99 (shipping). You must send in your receipt and proof of purchase (box top from this WinXP Home Upgrade). Microsoft will validate and ship you a copy of the Vista upgrade.

After you checkout, it informs you that you need to send proof of purchase (box top) and receipt. Microsoft will not charge you the $9.99 until you show proof and they ship your products. I found this out from another forum.

I know how you feel. Amazing enough, I had just pulled out my $30 rebate copies (from a deal very similar to this ($19.99 for XP Home Upgrade from OD)) and it showed up online tonight. Also, my $70 now says "Check requested" yet is still in the validation stage. Here's hoping to both getting through a little more quickly!

I got in on the September OD 70.00 MIR also. Been waiting more than the 60-90 days already. Today I got this email:

Elixer, you were told wrong. Quit bashing me, why would I lie? I only post on AT when I have something worth posting. View the join date, noob.

I never said Microsoft was greedy, nor did I try to defend my actions? I didn't feel like paying for the operating system until I got it for $15AR, you got a problem with that?

You can infact have a pirated copy of XP Pro and install this, of course you will want to do a COMPLETE FORMAT. So to answer the other guy's question, no it does not leave your applications/games/drivers intact, you will need to completely reinstall Windows.

wait so lets say you do this and send it in to get a vopy of vista...can you still use your XP - or does the proof of purchase have some number that they can trace to a cd key and thus render your copy of xp useless?

So it's $30 for a boxed version of XP Home Edition and then $10 for a DVD copy of Vista Basic Edition without the cool Aero Glass.

I was sort of in the same position: I had a Univ. mass-licensed XP legally installed on my computer, but I'd ceased working for them. Then that new validation cr*p at M$ decided I was illegit' and it wouldn't permit updates.

How'd they know you stopped working for them? Is this the same case with students when they stop going to school?

its possible that M$ tossed the license key on the "nogo" list on their update/genuine validation site ..

Wondering if I will be able to get Vista at reduced rate when it comes out?
