Windows XP (I searched first)

This isn't about support,you bought it,you (should) have the right to use it forever.
You can't expect it to run on new hardware but you should be able to run it at least.

You bought a licence and tacitly agreed to it. Part of that licence likely links to Windows support lifecycle, so that eventually it would die, which it has, and you still want to use it 14yrs later?

Yet it seem possible to activate an existing xp system that has a new install , so the link between licensing and hardware is working . But for new system it does not seem possible and in this way XP will eventuality fade away . Have XP pc and last update i received 2 weeks ago , so the xp pc seem to getting a little after support . I am glad they not pull the plug complete by disabling xp al together .

If the license agreement didn't say anything about the software only being usable for a limited period of time then someone should be able to use it 14 years later or 24 years later.

Support is different but they should be able to install and use it.

Isn't the only problem here is that he's trying to use an OEM copy on a different machine which isn't legal?

Surely that wouldn't have activated on the year of the OS's release anyway?

But it could depend on how many times XP is reactivated again on newer system , my XP is the first release and activated to much over that time, and can only be activated again by phone and that do not work anymore. Got another XP pc that is not to much activated and can be done on line .

i activated so many copies of windows xp last year for older computers with users who didn't want to spend much money. windows xp with free anti virus (such as avast) and libre software to replace microsoft office, using mozilla firefox or opera software was all that was required. NONE of the windows xp computers have had viruses or trojans for a year now.

just purchased another windows xp professional with service pack 3 and this will be my last one.

I've had to call to activate a few times. You do NOT need to visit any websites. You give them a number, they give you a number, and thats it.

i have done it that way as well.
