XP doesn't exist as far as MS is concerned anymore, so to speak.

I understand, so what are my options as my hardware is pretty much made for XP? I'm not looking to do anything Illegal just activate my existing copy.

Thanks Grumpy!!!

Well did you visit said site?
Technical support for XP has stopped so that's probably why the phone service has stoped working.

I would be pissed if MS stopped activating XP copies, just because it went EOL. I can understand, no new patch development, but how can they just up and stop people using the software that they paid for?

I've never had to "call to activate" XP. Don't you just type the serial number and it lets you in when you install it? Or are you talking about making it "genuine" for that silly Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) or whatever? I always just remove that annoying update.

when i tried your method to activate it, pretty sure that's why I always did the phone in to activate it. I assume sense the original hardware that the copy came with is gone I am as you say SOL? I may actually have a part of that computer.

If it's an OEM license key that came plastered on an old computer, that's tied to that particular computer, you're not supposed to be able to activate it on a different one.

If that's your issue, then that's your problem, not Microsoft's. Next time, buy a retail copy, you can transfer those between machines.

They wrote it, why not? Why do they have to support prehistoric rubbish?

This isn't about support, you bought it,you (should) have the right to use it forever.
You can't expect it to run on new hardware but you should be able to run it at least.

they all are using free anti virus and i've not has any problems. first thing i did was uninstall anything made by microsoft so office had to go and it's been replaced with libre software.

In my opinion this is pointing to an issue with the particular code/ copy of Windows you are using. I have only encountered "call to activate" on OEM copies, and on a later version when I upgraded the CPU.

Can you give us more specifics about this situation? XP is still supported for those who are paying for the extended support, so I see no reason to think that XP would not continue to activate. As of late last year I had a couple copied of XP that would still activate without issue.

The keyboard doesn't have anything to do with it, it's the motherboard that has to stay the same for the license to be valid

XP SP3-32 bit can install and run on current Intel Z97 chipset boards. Although: it's a much easier process when the bios is set for IDE mode for the hard drive controller, but installing in AHCI mode is even possible. There's drivers for the Intel 217 LAN port and Realtek 1150 audio, so those do work on a Gigabyte Z97 board.
It's presently being set up for use with a parallel port dongle, required for use with a Windows 95 era program called: PSpice 8.0.

Note: AFAIK, Windows Update can still provide online updates for all Microsoft operating systems: at least for Windows 95 + anything newer. There's even extended support updates for XP available, via registry changes that sort of impersonate an XP "point of sale" operating system.

You don't own the software. You're paying them for a license to use it. Big difference.

Think of it kind of like a drivers license. You paid for it and can use it whenever, but it is revokable and subject to certain terms and conditions. Closest analogy I could think of.

Does it say anything about there being a limited time of use in the EULA?
