OK guys, I just built a new computer, specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz, 4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB
DFI LANParty LT X38-T2R (Intel X38-ICH9R) motherboard (latest 1-11-08 BIOS)
4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 (5-5-5-18 timings)
eVGA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
SB Audigy 2 ZS soundcard
Western Digital WD7500AAKS SATA hard drive (connected to ICH9R SATA)
NEC ND-3500AG + ND-3550A DVD-burners (connected to JMicron JMB363 controller)
Antec NeoHE 650w PSU
Antec P182 Gun-Metal Black case
*LATEST DRIVERS FOR EVERYTHING* (if you want specific versions, just ask)
First off, I want to say that everything SEEMS to be fine. However, I've run into some VERY strange issues. I've tried installing Windows XP from 2 seperate sources, one being a retail version of Windows XP SP2, and the other being my DELL Windows XP SP2 OEM version (just for kicks). Now, I usually integrate all hotfixes up to the current release using RyanVM's Post-SP2 Update Pack, but the issues happen whether or not I'm using the update pack or not, or whether I use an alternate one, called Xable's Update Pack (they're similar).
Now, I've tried multiple installs, and here's what I've done:
Retail XP SP2 + RyanVM Pack
Retail XP SP2 + Xable Pack
Retail XP SP2 ("virgin")
DELL XP SP2 + RyanVM Pack
DELL XP SP2 + Xable Pack
DELL XP SP2 ("virgin")
All of them are giving me VERY strange issues. Ranging from nothing being able to start due to errors in UXTheme.dll to things not installing because the Windows Installer crashes constantly. It's different every time. One thing I have noticed is that on EVERY install I've tried, on the "first boot" (booting to create my user account, etc) the computer sits for about 2 minutes at the Windows XP load screen, but it's not locked. Then, it continues on its way. Any subsequent reboots take 30 seconds or so to hit the desktop, which is what I'd expect.
I've also run Memtest-86 v3.4 with no errors, so it can't be the RAM (one would think...).
All voltages, timings and temperatures seem to be correct, and nothing looks immediately off to me (I've been doing this for several years). But, I'm really at a loss here. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be appreciated. I am tech-savvy, so feel free to be all techy with me, I'll know what you're talking about. I just want to get this all resolved.
