I am getting these weird occurences where Windows literally drains all of my memory (512 MB worth) and all I am left with is 0 physical memory while the Page File usage shoots up to a whopping 1 Gig usage and then a few moments later everything returns to normal?

Does anyone know why this is happening?

This is a fresh install of Windows XP with only a few programs installed on it like ICQ, Norton System Works 2002 Pro.

What is causing these memory drain spikes?

Seeing as I have never seen this problem on my rig I would suspect that one of the applications you have installed is causing it. I don't use ICQ or Norton, but if I had to guess I would think Norton is responsible.

Historically, Norton has had strange/bizarre behavior when running on a new OS.

the only thing i can think that does this is Cacheman.. it will try to recover leaked memory.. so when it does this it will do as you say.. reduce the memory to 0, have the swap increase and then go back to normal.

I have experienced this memory leak as well. It seems AIM will eat up all of your virtual memory if you leave it running. After 2 days or so the VM is over 100megs! Not sure if it's the same problem, but just restarting the application releases the memory back. Might be worth a try if you leave you computer on 24/7.
